If I understand the collaboration between the film makers and the government archivists I think(?) that all of the large format film or a very large subset of it was scanned and digitized.  So its in a government archive?  And available to anyone?  Perhaps obtainable online?  And not copyrighted or otherwise restricted in its use?  So what's to keep someone else, perhaps one or more of our own video perpetrators from making a longer film of similar quality?  Or what's to keep us from watching chunks of  the raw film in our spare time?  Perhaps we form a group to watch it and categorize / rank it for the benefit of the person that will edit it into a whole?   Where is it stored at again?

edit:  Here's a start but doesn't seem to lead directly by itself to the treasure trove - https://www.archives.gov/news/articles/apollo-11-footage-debuts-in-new-documentary

I finally saw it today.  It is still in a few theaters here a month after its release.  Superior!  A fine historical document that like Apollo itself represents the meticulous work of many.

Was it the 90 minute version or 4x minute version?

The 93 minute Todd Douglas Miller/Neon documentary that is this thread's focus.

Ed -
Congrats in getting opportunity to see the 93 minute film.
What did you think of the LC39 Firing Room sequence from the back racks, with the pen analog recorders, moving forward panning the contractor’s trenches?  Long time ago touching equipment from that era.

The control room scenes at KSC and Houston were fascinating.  So many people!  Coffee cups and cigs and candy wrappers everywhere (we couldn't have beverages during STS era in CITE control rooms).  I could almost read the writing on papers on console desks.  Push buttons and switches and CRTs.  Incandescent indicator lamps.  Dial telephones.  A humming analog universe.

By the way, my wife appreciated the simple graphical interludes that illustrated the progression of the mission.  Those clearly explain what was, after all, a very complicated mission to anyone who has never been immersed in spaceflight history.  The graphics prompted multiple, good questions.  "So they just threw away the lunar lander?"  "How did they find each other in lunar orbit?" (asked during that terrific scene of the LM ascent stage appearing as a tiny dot moving across the lunar surface.)  "How are they going to slow down?" (asked as the CM approached the Earth with a 25,000 mph-ish and accelerating velocity displayed).

So far - no region free release, nor any region other than A1 :( That means that foreigners like me wont be able to watch it on anything other than my desktop PC drive, or find some software to crack it... :'(

Disappointing and stupid. They're practically asking for it to be pirated which will of course happen fast.

I’ll get the Blu, but had been hoping for a 4K release.  Maybe they’ll have one later?

NEON has the worldwide distribution rights, so hopefully will release outside the U.S. at some point.  It is a highly rated film, but not a big money-maker even in the U.S.

An interview with the director and space historian of the Apollo 11 film:

Apollo 11 Director Interview: Editing 11,000 Hours of Footage – /Film

Quote
During the 2019 SXSW Film Festival, I sat down with Apollo 11 director Todd Douglas Miller and space historian Robert Pearlman.

This is a film that I fell in love with from the moment that I saw it during the world premiere at the Ray during Sundance.  While I regret that I was unable to see the film on an IMAX screen, Apollo 11 is one of those films that you must experience on the biggest screen you can find. It’s not often that a documentary crosses over into the editing category during awards ceremonies, Apollo 11 is one of those films that I hope people strongly consider for Best Editing.
If we don't continuously lower the cost to access space, how are we ever going to afford to expand humanity out into space?

Thanks for the interview link, Ron. The interviewer did a very amateurish job with the write-up, I must say.

Pinging this thread with a reminder that the Blu-ray/DVD will be out (in the US at least) next week (May 14th).

Fantastic preview, thanks for the link!

It really bothers me that they won't release it (yet...) in UHD. Releasing in Blu-ray with barely any extras on the disk.... Well, that just looks like a blatant money-grab by Universal. You can be sure that in a years' time they will release the UHD disk with extras and all, so a maximum number of people will end up buying it twice.

Given that all the footage and audio this documentary is based on is public property from the National Archives it feels a bit wrong to me. Of course a lot of work went into editing and producing the documentary but that doesn't mean they should squeeze the lemon like that.

It looks as though now there might be a release in other Blu-Ray regions at the end of the year. That's the good news. The bad news is that on nearly every Amazon site: Flat Earthers and 'Hoaxtards' are lining up to 'review bomb' the film and denigrate Apollo as much as they can. I urge people who have seen it to counteract this garbage by posting positive reviews on Amazon! :(

E.g. it looks like there's a UK release on Nov 4th.

As soon as I heard the rumble of piston engines and the sound of a "tracked vehicle", I automatically knew that we were going to see a scene featuring a Mobile Launcher riding on a Crawler Transporter.

True to form, Apollo-11 did in fact launch from Mobile Launcher-1(ML-1) which later would become Mobile Launcher Platform-3(MLP-3) for Shuttle usage..

AWESOME!!!!

The moment that bass drone at 3:53 kicked in gave me goosebumps. I guess I am too much of a nerd since I understood the 5 flick switches thrown in that scene, but it raised a question as to why the fuel level sensors apparently were only available on outboard engines 1 and 2?

I would think that knowing when each engine had its fuel intake depleted and if it was before LOX depletion would be of primary importance as fuel depletion before LOX is usually more "bad" than LOX depletion before fuel.
