How many folks worldwide follow space?
« on: 11/28/2018 05:23 am »
I wonder, if somebody has any study how big is the space community in the world, and if is growthing... ???

This is important because, if more people are interest and curious about the space science, and the space technologies, more pression has the politics for implement a strong space program, incluying better education programs,  in the different countries in the world...

I would say there's a very big difference between people who are interested in, or curious about, space / space programs, and enthusiasts who follow space / space program developments closely.

There are probably hundreds of millions of the former, but only hundreds of thousands of the latter.

In the USA, polls show that NASA has strong public support, which is to say, most people think NASA should exist; but there is very low support for increasing the budget for NASA.

This post is from 2001, but is illustrative. The numbers fluctuate a bit, but the general results have been the same for a long time now.

We have a problem of communication about how much the government spend in the space...in USA and Europe...

https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-budget-estimates-opinions-poll-2018-12?r=UK#even-people-who-think-nasas-budget-should-get-cut-would-actually-increase-funding-4

https://www.esa.int/About_Us/Welcome_to_ESA/How_much_do_European_citizens_know_about_space

And the people, look like they want the space budget are bigger...

How much can improve the budget of both agencies with better space education and better support from the people?

We can't expect NASA's budget to increase, even with more popular support. NASA gets about 0.5% of the total federal budget, but that's only part of the story.

Most of the budget consists of non-discretionary items, basically fixed budget items. The discretionary budget includes defense, which has a huge budget because of its priority. US wants to maintain superpower status and is engaged in conflicts around the world. That's expensive.

NASA gets about 3% of the non-defense discretionary budget. That's a big chunk of what's left considering all the other departments fighting for a piece of the pie. We're lucky NASA hasn't seen big budget cuts.

NASA and the rest of the government encouraging commercial spaceflight is the best way to go.

Even with budge for NASA increasing the planners are told to be conservative.    I asked 3 of my coworkers who were 18 and 19 if they even think we landed on the Moon and they didn't know much about it.

Edit/Lar: removed overtly political views. This reduced the post by over half. Don't be political.
