Makes me glad that BFR isn't being funded by NASA or the Air Force.

As someone who group up idolizing NASA, this is sad. And also can't be overstated. It may make the funding dicey, but this separation has become absolutely necessary if the United States is to remain at the forefront of human space exploration.

This is so. Dumb.

And of course this is politically motivated.

Which, as several analysts pointed out, was a very hard case for SEC to prove. Especially if he really meant it.
He admitted $420 was made up as a joke. He didn't mean it.

So it was an SEC violation AND a pot reference!
Lock him up! Lock him up!

Drill hole in Soyuz?  Stick some epoxy over it!
Failing manned launch?  Praise the LAS!
Agency head banned from the US for human rights violations?
Meet him in Russia!  Smile broadly.

Start to lose your political backing for the glorious Emerpor’s robe covering a huge chunk of your budget?
Have your favorite falling behind on “Capture the Flag”?
Find out that claiming the invention of Tang for a half century and celebrating welding machines doesn’t make you as cool as tandem first stage landings and an electric sports car heading for the asteroid belt?

Do Panic!
Call out the dogs!

I have been waiting for something out of the blue.
This will do it.

There are always violations.
Staff will spend weeks on training sessions and taking certification tests.
Gotta love those cheesy animations and the obscure lingo quizzes.

One of our many VPs sent an all-hands on the utter seriousness of using the correct forms, no matter how inconvenient they are to find and don’t really work when you do. (Some dastardly fiend reported a test failure on an Engineering Report form!  Better he takes a hit off a joint!)

I am not optimistic.
It was pleasant to be within eight months or so of a SpaceX launch with crew.

What kind of wastrels would dump a perfectly good booster in the ocean after just one use?

For what it's worth, I've had some really strongly worded e-mails of outrage over this story.............from NASA folk. It's been covered. We know enough people even on this site and how they treat the hardware (especially during Shuttle - and to which they've moved into commercial crew) as their own children. Disgusting they think they'll "find" something after working alongside them for so long (part of the aforementioned outrage).

Seriously? All this because Elon did that podcast etc? As if he was on the factory floor with a spanner in one hand and a joint in the other working on vehicles?

Everything points to - as Eric reported - political funny games at play.

Anyway, I don't do politics, so I'll only add one of my tweets ;D

My id wants SpaceX to announce that because they do take safety very seriously they intend to suspend *ALL* NASA-related activities, until the review has been completed, effective immediately.

That would be freaking amazing.

Maybe help remind the senators that they can't bully SpaceX anymore.

LEO is the ocean, not an island (let alone a continent). We create cruise liners to ride the oceans, not artificial islands in the middle of them. We need a physical place, which has physical resources, to make our future out there.

Hey Chris, can you put together an article summarizing and quoting objections from NASA employees about this? I think it would be good to leak the internal message about this to the rest of the world. Many people are automatically blaming Elon because of his perceived issues with Tesla and automatically believe "NASA" is in the right.

Joining in late..

Honestly, let them.  Spend a bunch of money, maybe delay the program, maybe cancel it.

Who cares. BFS is coming up and NASA can't stop it. If NASA wants to ride SLS/Orion, so be it...

My guess is that Boeing already does random drug testing per DOT & DOD requirements. Does SpaceX?

Based on some stuff that was relayed to me this night I am going to name a name:

Richard Shelby.

And yes, it is politically motivated. From what I hear Shelby went thru the roof when he heard about Stephen Jurczyk's remarks about retiring SLS when BFR and New Glenn enter service.

Note: Stephen Jurczyk is NASA's associate administrator and his suggestion to retire SLS has been publically denied by NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine.

Any company with a government contract and a halfway competent HR department will do "random" drug testing. The catch, though is that the randomness often resembles the the cave man random number generator that Dilbert came across*. It usually is pretty clear in a company who will test clean and who won't, and the 'random' drug tests will reflect that.

We still are.

From what I hear: No.

There is going to be delays. Key personnel won't be available for work for some time because of the reviews being conducted.

Both manned demo missions (from Boeing and SpaceX) just shifted to the right. Its just a matter of time before this starts to show up on FPIP and other flight planning documentation.

And what's not so cute is that the USA will be stuck with Shelby until November 2022 (at least). Four more years (at least) of this nonsense.

This whole thing makes me still angry at Elon. He is smart and he is long enough in the business to know that you don't provide ammo to your detractors. Taking this hit was both stupid and completely superfluous.
You want to be inspired by things. You want to wake up in the morning and think the future is going to be great. That's what being a spacefaring civilization is all about. It's about believing in the future and believing the future will be better than the past. And I can't think of anything more exciting than being out there among the stars.

This whole thing makes me still angry at Elon. He is smart and he is long enough in the business to know that you don't provide ammo to your detractors. Taking this hit was both stupid and completely superfluous.

The last person to be angry at for this is Elon. Let's not blame the victims because 'they could have seen it coming'.
Failure is not only an option, it's the only way to learn.
