Kompas-3 and Sumbandila launch

OK, it's still a far away, but I find this launch somehow interesting. So that's why I start a thread about it already.
Just a reminder of what this launch is about. The
satellite is developed and produced (exept for the solar panels and batteries) in South Africa. It will be launched around Christmas time on a
Shtil' 2.1 from a submarine in the Barentz Sea.
For people with a basic knowledge of Dutch/Afrikaans, more information can be found
here If the satellite passes the final tests it will be shipped to Russia in November and launched between 20 and 25 december. The satellite is equipped with a multi-spectre camera and has a ground resolution of 6,25 meter. The link also includes a picture.
If someone has updates on this launch, please post them here
(Damn what is Afrikaans een "grappige" language

)

Any more news about Sumbandila launch?? There is some confusion about the previous launch date of December 25th (now planned to be the Kompas-3 launch)...

I haven't been able to find new updates on any of the websites (such ans SunSpace or Stellenbosch). It could easily that both the Kompass 3 and Sumbandila will be lofted on the same launch vehicle, performance wise.

fairly new story
here, its dated 7 november.
Sumbandila recently successfully completed a series of performance tests at the Institute for Satellite and Software Applications, at Grabouw, near Cape Town. Sumbandila will be handed over to the DST on 15 November and be shipped to a naval facility near Murmansk, in northern Russia.

www.satindex.com reports that the sat will finally be flown to Russia on May 14. So lets hope that launch will actually happen anytime soon after that...

This schedule does not contain Kompas-3/Sumbandila launch in June, therefore it means that this launch is postponed again...

hint provided by the free preview from
satellite news digest and a full article provided by
Industry Watch.
It seems that the SA-002 won't be launched because South Africa doesn't allow a telementry site to be build on it's territory. Whether this was part of the contract or just additional demands from Russia I don't know. I assume the sat is actually in Russia by now

This is also very unfortunate for South Africa. The satellite was waiting to be launched since December 2006. Its January 2008 and the satellite is still on the storage. If the cause on the news is right, there is no chance for the other Russian launchers to fly Sumbandilasat. Some others are another issue. Politics are always involved in high tech business. Another example is Theos....Also remember Tecsar....

Why Kompas-3?
That would be Kompas-2 or Kompas-2N.

Why Kompas-3?
That would be Kompas-2 or Kompas-2N.
Kompas-2 has already been launched, and the satellite originally refered to Kompas-2N is apparently now called Kompas-3.

Russian launches for foreigner satellites turn out to be more problematic. We saw Sumbandilasat, lets see if Theos will manage or not....
Simple commercial contracts are not really mor problematic, but it becomes mor problematic, when politcal decissions are involved or other deals are connected with the launch deal - as it is probably in the Sumbandila case:
"The disagreement is said to involve a second Russian satellite, which the South African Defence Ministry did not want to use."

Sumbandilasat was 6.5m optical satellite for scientific purposes. Russians wanted to use advantage of this launch and wanted to establish TT&C station in SA which refers to the "Russian Satellite" on the news. It used to be a commercial launch at the begining, I assume, then Russians' request made it political....

SA, Russia to meet next month to finalise Sumbandila satellite launchhttp://www.engineeringnews.co.za/article.php?a_id=134155 "South Africa and Russia were finalising the details for the launch of the multi-billion rand Sumbandila science satellite later this year, the Department of Foreign Affairs said at the weekend.
Foreign Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma said the two countries have agreed to meet before the end of June to "thrash out details" of the launch of the South African satellite.
The Minister was speaking at the South Africa-Russia intergovernmental committee on Trade and Economic Cooperation in Moscow, which was attended by high-level Russian delegates, as well as South African Minerals and Energy DG Sandile Nogxina, and representatives from Eskom, Umthobo Resources, Diamond Trader, Mintek, PetroSA, Pelawan and Sekoko Mining"

New seperation ring and other environmental tests will delay the launch as well as force Sunspace to change the structure, if they go something different than Shtil.

Unfortunately Shtill is out of discussing thus Kompas is out of discussing as well.

Russia and SA to discuss alternative launch option for Sumbandilahttp://www.engineeringnews.co.za/article.php?a_id=136940"A Russian delegation is due in South Africa in the near future to discuss an alternative launch option for South Africa’s Sumbandila satellite.
Sumbandila-Sat was originally meant to have been launched last year from a Russian submarine. However, the Russian Ministry of Defence refused to authorise the launch. Russia’s civilian space agency, Roskosmos, nevertheless wishes to honour its agreement with South Africa to launch the satellite.
The Russian delegation will be discussing the possible launch of the South African satellite on a Russian civilian rocket from the world-renowned Baikonur Cosmodrome"

Russia and SA to discuss alternative launch option for Sumbandila
http://www.engineeringnews.co.za/article.php?a_id=136940
Is there any other launcher than Dnepr which launches from Baikonur?
Soyuz, Proton, Zenit and Strela to name four. It says civilian, not commercial.
I suspect that it will end up on the Soyuz-2.1b launching at the end of the year with a Meteor satellite. Anik listed a "foreign satellite" as being part of the payload.

No, I meant launch to LEO orbit from Baikonur. Strela has not successfully flight yet, Zenith doesnt launch to LEO. Does Proton used to launch to LEO orbit?
The most relevant candidate seems like Dnepr, if ISCK can really launch from Baikonur again.

Strela has flown once in 2003, Zenit and Proton have flown numerous LEO Missions.

Quote from
http://johnhelmer.net/?p=504"This week [September 8-14 - anik], Vyacheslav Mikhailchenko, spokesman for Roskosmos, told BD that an agreement is now in place for the Sumbandila launch to take place. The timing, he said, is likely to be between December 25 of this year and March 25, 2009; and will depend on the launching schedule at Baikonour. “Agreement on launch of the satellite was reached, and now the specialists are working on the technical issues. The launch will run in compliance with a governmental decree, which is being prepared now. There are technical questions, and since both parties have reached an agreement, this decree is a purely technical procedure the Russian side is obliged to resolve.”"
