OK, it's still a far away, but I find this launch somehow interesting. So that's why I start a thread about it already.
Just a reminder of what this launch is about. The
satellite is developed and produced (exept for the solar panels and batteries) in South Africa. It will be launched around Christmas time on a
Shtil' 2.1 from a submarine in the Barentz Sea.
For people with a basic knowledge of Dutch/Afrikaans, more information can be found
here If the satellite passes the final tests it will be shipped to Russia in November and launched between 20 and 25 december. The satellite is equipped with a multi-spectre camera and has a ground resolution of 6,25 meter. The link also includes a picture.
If someone has updates on this launch, please post them here
(Damn what is Afrikaans een "grappige" language

)

I haven't been able to find new updates on any of the websites (such ans SunSpace or Stellenbosch). It could easily that both the Kompass 3 and Sumbandila will be lofted on the same launch vehicle, performance wise.

fairly new story
here, its dated 7 november.
Sumbandila recently successfully completed a series of performance tests at the Institute for Satellite and Software Applications, at Grabouw, near Cape Town. Sumbandila will be handed over to the DST on 15 November and be shipped to a naval facility near Murmansk, in northern Russia.

www.satindex.com reports that the sat will finally be flown to Russia on May 14. So lets hope that launch will actually happen anytime soon after that...

This schedule does not contain Kompas-3/Sumbandila launch in June, therefore it means that this launch is postponed again...

hint provided by the free preview from
satellite news digest and a full article provided by
Industry Watch.
It seems that the SA-002 won't be launched because South Africa doesn't allow a telementry site to be build on it's territory. Whether this was part of the contract or just additional demands from Russia I don't know. I assume the sat is actually in Russia by now

So what about Kompas-3?

This is also very unfortunate for South Africa. The satellite was waiting to be launched since December 2006. Its January 2008 and the satellite is still on the storage. If the cause on the news is right, there is no chance for the other Russian launchers to fly Sumbandilasat. Some others are another issue. Politics are always involved in high tech business. Another example is Theos....Also remember Tecsar....

Why Kompas-3?
That would be Kompas-2 or Kompas-2N.

Why Kompas-3?
That would be Kompas-2 or Kompas-2N.
Kompas-2 has already been launched, and the satellite originally refered to Kompas-2N is apparently now called Kompas-3.
