Potential Space Guard alternative to Space Force
« on: 07/08/2018 12:34 pm »
Article in Politico caught my eye discussing the potential creation of a Space Guard instead of or in addition to a Space Force. Difference being Guard, like the Coast Guard, would deal with regulatory, safety, and such matters of import to commercial use and economic growth in space.

Seems worthy of a separate thread.
From "The Rhetoric of Interstellar Flight", by Paul Gilster, March 10, 2011: We’ll build a future in space one dogged step at a time, and when asked how long humanity will struggle before reaching the stars, we’ll respond, “As long as it takes.”

I was thinking along similar lines after the reported FCC spat with Swarm : https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/techcrunch.com/2018/03/09/fcc-accuses-stealth-space-startup-of-unauthorized-satellite-deployment/amp/
Policing is going to become more important and it's an activity that inevitably involves regularly cooperating with other nations and, even worse, having to deal with your own nation's civilians. Assuming the human race survives then in an era of cheap spaceflight policing will be a much bigger day to day headache than extending one's ability to participate in Armageddon.
