Cutaway graphic of the Soyuz rocket
« on: 06/10/2018 04:34 pm »
Hello everyone,

I drew a complete plan of the Soyuz rocket that I tried to make as accurate as possible.

This plan is already available for free access on Wikipedia in French:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:%C3%89clat%C3%A9_fus%C3%A9e_et_vaisseau_Soyouz.svg

I made a translation into English:

http://spiki.org/astrobidules/forum/soyouz-beta-en.jpg

Before I publish it on Wikipedia in English, I want the english-speaker community read back it. Can you tell me if you see any translation mistakes ?

See http://www.russianspaceweb.com/soyuz.html

Soyouz MS -> Soyuz MS

Life Compartment -> Habitation Compartment (BO)

Descent Compartment -> Descent Module (SA)

Machines and Instruments Compartment -> Instrument and Propulsion Compartment (PAO)
12 Nitrogen _tetroxide_ tank (oxidizer) (x2)
13 _Thermal_ sensor (x6)

Block F (E) -> Block E [We use the transliteral version, otherwise it gets confusing. Change all references form Block F to Block E, and Blocks B,C,D,E to Blocks B,V,G,D.]
11 Jettisoned panels after separation from Block A (x3)
13 Four-chamber engine RD-0110

Block A (bottom)
17 Toroidal tank of _liquid_ nitrogen (pressurization of the tanks)
20 Four-chamber RD-108A engine

Blocks B,C,D,E (Б,В,Г,Д) -> Blocks B,V,G,D
17 Toroidal tank of _liquid_ nitrogen (pressurization of the tanks)
32 RD-107A engine (same as RD-108A with 2 verniers instead of 4)
33 Holding bar to Block A (x2)

Life Compartment -> Habitation Compartment (BO)

Descent Compartment -> Descent Module (SA)

Hmmm... I don't think it is a good translation.

Russian names are Спускаемый аппарат and Бытовой отсек.

Спускаемый аппарат means "descent apparatus". Since all other modules are called "compartments", this particular one is often called "descent compartment".

Бытовой отсек means "compartment for everyday life", so the translation "Life Compartment" seems good to me.

That is awesome! One of the best "first posts" from someone on NSF!  8)

Made a slight change to the thread title to help. :)

The version on Wikipedia :

Now one needs to be created for Soyuz-MS on Soyuz-2.1A for that maiden albeit uncrewed flight on August 28 2019.
