Spacecraft 'fit-check’ at Energia
March 28, 2018

Roscosmos cosmonauts Nikolai Tikhonov and Andrei Babakin took part in the so-called ‘fit-check’ of Soyuz MS-10 spacecraft which is currently standing in the assembly jig at the Corporation where it is being built.

Within the framework of the final spacecraft processing operations, the cosmonauts, accompanied by engineers, conducted a preliminary visual inspection and checks of the spacecraft equipment and familiarized themselves with cargo layout, with engineering mock-ups standing in for the actual flight kits. As noted by specialists, it is very important for cosmonauts to get a feel of the actual spacecraft interior, since the training mockup only gives an approximate idea of what is inside the cabin volume. Such exercises are also important for the engineers because they will have to accompany the future crew at Baikonur.

At present the cosmonauts can inspect the entire spacecraft, they can even have a look into the space below the seats. You won’t have a chance to do this with a flight model of a spacecraft at Baikonur. At the launch site the spacecraft is ready for the mission, while here it is still being configured and prepared. And the most important thing is for the crew to get used to and to settle into this cramped and confined cabin volume, - said Gennadi Tolstoy, representative of the RSC Energia department for crew technical training and activities design.

This isn’t a training mockup, this is the actual hardware that eventually you are going to operate. And just as sailors and pilots who always talk to their machines treat the hardware as a living thing, for me it’s the same thing here. The first time they meet each other, the sooner it happens, the better. The vehicle is almost ready: control panel, joysticks, spacecraft systems. So both the hardware and the humans are getting ready, this is a kind of a joint process, - summed up the results of the technical ‘fit-check’ cosmonaut Nikolai Tikhonov.

There will be a crew change for this mission... Tikhonov will not fly.

The question now is: why is Tikhonov bumped from the crew again?
Because the Falcon Heavy Test Flight was successful, it has inspired thousands of people to consider changing the future of space travel.

He was the flight engineer in the back-up crew of Soyuz MS-08.
So I think yes.

Because MLM launch is delayed to summer 2019, so Roscosmos took decision to keep the crew of Russian Segment of the ISS at a level of two cosmonauts.

I thought they were going to resume flying two cosmonauts on Soyuz starting on the Soyuz-MS 10 mission.
Because the Falcon Heavy Test Flight was successful, it has inspired thousands of people to consider changing the future of space travel.

Yes, it was scheduled.

But, I've just said, MLM delaying has changed the situation.

Have there been any discussions around anyone else in that third seat like before, or is that not an option this time?

Quote
Soyuz MS-10

The triangular design of the Soyuz MS-10 crew patch shows the spacecraft orbiting over the Earth's surface. Behind our blue planet, the elements of the Russian and American flags stress the international character of the space mission. The three stars, part of the US flag recall the original three crewmembers, before the removal of cosmonaut Tikhonov from this mission. In the backround of deep space, the silhouette of an owl is visible, symbolising the scientific wisdom that orbital research on board the International Space Station will gain. The orbital complex is shown in bright yellow on the left. The top right angle of the logo shows the direction of mankind's future dream: via the Moon to deep space. The Roscosmos logo is put at the top of the design, with the crew names underneath. The spacecraft designation is put in the centre of the patch. Designed by Luc van den Abeelen.

MEDIA ADVISORY M18-092
First Astronaut of 2013 Class to Fly to Space Available for Media Interviews

NASA astronaut Nick Hague, along with his crewmate Alexey Ovchinin of the Russian space agency Roscosmos, will discuss their upcoming mission to the International Space Station in a news conference at 2 p.m. EDT Monday, June 18, at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston.

The news conference will be broadcast live on NASA Television and on the agency’s website, and the crew will be available for in-person or remote media interviews afterward.

Hague will launch to the space station aboard the Soyuz MS-10 spacecraft, commanded by Ovchinin, Oct. 11, from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.

Hague and Ovchinin will join the station’s Expedition 57 crew, returning to Earth in April 2019 as members of Expedition 58. Hague, who is the first astronaut from the 2013 astronaut class to be assigned to a mission, will serve as a flight engineer for Expeditions 57 and 58. This will be Ovchinin’s second spaceflight, and he will serve as a flight engineer on Expeditions 57 and the commander of Expedition 58.

U.S. reporters wishing to participate in person or reserve an interview opportunity must contact Johnson's newsroom at 281-483-5111 by 4 p.m. Friday, June 15.

Reporters who wish to participate by telephone must call Johnson's newsroom no later than 1:45 p.m. on June 18. Those following the briefing on social media may ask questions using the hashtag #askNASA.

During a planned six-month mission, the station crew members will take part in about 250 research investigations and technology demonstrations not possible on Earth in order to advance scientific knowledge of Earth, space, physical, and biological sciences. Science conducted on the space station continues to yield benefits for humanity and will enable future long-duration human and robotic exploration into deep space. The crew is also scheduled to be onboard during the expected first flights of NASA’s Commercial Crew Program, which will resume launches of human spaceflight from U.S. soil.

Hague is a native of Hoxie, Kansas, and a colonel in the U.S. Air Force. Prior to his selection, he was part of the Air Force Fellows program in Washington, where he worked as an adviser to the U.S. Senate on matters of national defense and foreign policy.

Hague earned a bachelor’s degree in astronautical engineering from the U.S. Air Force Academy and a master’s degree in aeronautical and astronautical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
