Second Reflight of Core Discussion/Speculation
« on: 03/14/2018 11:19 AM »
So there have now been a number of successful reflights on the Block 3 cores and it looks like we might see a block 4 reflight in the next month.   Will SpaceX attempt a second reflight of any of the Block 4 cores or will they wait for the new beefed up block 5?

I think we will only see a second reflight on a Block 4 Booster if they fall short on their Block 5 production. Exception might be the in flight abort for Dragon 2, since that one might quite likely loose the booster. Would make good use of an old core, might even be a spectacular way to go for the booster if they trigger the test by firing the flight termination system at Max-Q...

If they felt confident in flying a Block 4, three times they'd be doing it.  Doubtful, they would get pressured to fly a vehicle they aren't confident in because of schedule pressure.

A loss of vehicle has far great impacts than waiting a few weeks or months.

They Block 5's are on the way, just a matter of time at this point.

It's also a question of resources. The way Block 3/4 needs to be refurbished it might take away resources from building new Block 5s which will be cheaper fairly quickly. They need something like 15 cores this year before reuse can start.
