Wow, is Trump really saying this? His (presumably) impromptu comments are incredible.

'It's alright if the rich guys beat us to Mars, as long as they're American, and we'll take credit for it.'

Funny because it's too close to the truth?

Well, you have to give Trump that much: for once he was honest.

Because when SpaceX puts humans on Mars it is a given that the US President and US Congress will take credit for it, not matter what their actual involvement was.

He was half-joking. But they should take credit for it. For the government, knowing when to get out of the way is a huge step which deserves praise.

Report on first advisory group meeting:

Quote
Space council’s “think tank” starts work
by Jeff Foust — June 20, 2018

WASHINGTON — An advisory group dubbed the “think tank” for the National Space Council formally kicked off its work June 19 with a broad but vague mandate to study space policy issues.

The Users’ Advisory Group (UAG) of the National Space Council held its first meeting at NASA Headquarters, a five-hour “inaugural and, quite frankly, organizational session” of the committee, in the words of its chairman, retired U.S. Navy Adm. James Ellis.

The US government stepping out of the way? With US Congress pulling the purse strings? Get real.

SpaceX will, IMO, land people on Mars DESPITE the government being in the way.
