MEDIA ADVISORY M18-023

NASA to Air Russian Space Station Cargo Ship Launch, Docking

Loaded with three tons of food, fuel and supplies, a Russian Progress cargo spacecraft is scheduled to launch at 3:58 a.m. EST (2:58 p.m. Baikonur time) Sunday, Feb. 11, to resupply the International Space Station.

The launch from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan and docking to the space station will be carried live on NASA Television the agency’s website beginning at 3:30 a.m.

NASA TV coverage will resume at 6:30 a.m., when the Progress 69 cargo vehicle, planned for a fast-track to the world’s only orbital laboratory, will dock at 7:24 a.m. The three-and-a-half hour trip will demonstrate an expedited capability for potential use on future Russian cargo and crew launches to the complex.

If any technical issues are identified by Russian flight controllers in the early stage of the flight, the spacecraft will be capable of defaulting to a standard two-day rendezvous profile. The new Progress spacecraft will remain at the international outpost until late August.

LV Soyuz general integration is completed

February 8, 2018

Today, February 8, the overall assembly of space transportation system consisting of the new-series cargo transportation spacecraft Progress MS-08 and launch vehicle (LV) Soyuz-2.1a has been successfully completed today. During the day, the orbital module with the spacecraft was mated to the third stage of the rocket at the launch vehicle processing facility.

Rolling-out of the launch vehicle with Progress MS-08 spacecraft from the processing facility and erecting it on the launch pad of Area 31 of the Baikonur cosmodrome are planned for February 9.

The launch of cargo spacecraft Progress MS-08 under the International Space Station (ISS) program is scheduled for 11:58 Moscow Time on February 11, 2018.

The spacecraft will deliver to the station propellant components, compressed gases, water, scientific equipment and consumable for the life support system, as well as containers with food, clothing, medical supplies and personal hygiene items for the members of the crew.

Progress MS-08 is also hosting a technology demonstration experiment called Фазопереход “Phase Transition”. This experiment deploys a series of new thermal control system components to the operational space environment to test their performance in a realistic flight scenario. Operated by TSNIIMASH, the experiment primarily looks into the efficiency of new heat pipes and radiators that rely on the phase transition of a working fluid to efficiently transport heat from electronic components to the radiator.

One distinctive feature of the Progress MS-08 cargo ship is the presence of three pairs of white rectangular panels attached to the exterior of the refueling section on the spacecraft. They are radiators of the Phasoperekhod ("phase transfer") LEU-TT-1 experiment testing so-called heat pipes, which might help to improve prospective light-weight thermal control systems.
