Atlas 303D was a Nike-Zeus test from 576-A1 at VAFB on 3/3/66 (some coincidence with that date and the Atlas serial number). It failed shortly after BECO due to a hydraulic line rupture that quickly caused the loss of sustainer hydraulics fluid and missile tumbling. GD/A undertook an extensive investigation and redesign effort in an attempt to correct this problem. Several possible causes for the hydraulic rupture were investigated as telemetry data did not provide any explanation and the booster fell into the Pacific far downrange and was not recoverable for examination.

The other of course is Mariner 4's booster, which used an all-metal payload shroud following the failure of Mariner 3's fiberglass shroud to jettison. The new shroud was significantly heavier than its predecessor which necessitated a couple of modifications to the Atlas propulsion system to wring more power out of it. The redesign effort was completed in a hurry to get Mariner 4 up before the close of the 1964 Mars launch window.

Mariner 4 was one of the first launches made after the organization shift in 1964 where NASA were put completely in charge of their programs and most direct Air Force involvement in NASA missions was phased out (previously, the Air Force had been in charge of preparing NASA launches and drafting mission reports).

Atlas 5303? Well, we all know what happened to that one. Tom Stafford truly earned his nickname "The Mayor of Pad 19" that day.

Best line from the CBS live coverage of the launch? When someone asks "It is very puzzling how the Range Safety Officer could have permitted the flight to continue."
