SpaceX Falcon 9 ZUMA Rocket Launch and Landing From Cocoa Beach

Cocoa Beach 365
Published on Jan 7, 2018

A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket lifts off from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station to deliver the ultra top secret ZUMZ satellite before the first stage returns for a pinpoint landing at Landing Zone One at Cape Canaveral, Florida.

It's Tony De La Rosa, ...I don't create this stuff, I just report it.

A stunning launch photo by John Kraus (combination of 3 exposures) - Note how you can see all three post-separation burns by the first stage.  :o

A favorable combination of circumstances found me around Cape Canaveral in position to watch the Zuma fight tonight, I decided to try and get as close as possible while splitting the distance between launch and landing areas. this put me at KARS Park on the western side of the Banana River 9.9 miles from SLC-40 and 7.6 miles from LZ-1. Being between travels, I didn't bring all my gear but made do with one camera and a borrowed flimsy tripod. Being my first opportunity to see a landing in person I wanted to focus more on watching it with my own eyes than through a view finder.

Videos do not capture the speed of the plunge back toward the pad, the sharpness of the triple sonic boom, or the apparent closeness to the vehicle due to the high angle near the zenith when the entry burn begins. Must be experienced in person to fully appreciate.

I did shoot an up and down streak shot with that wobbly tripod and some distant day and night shots from Port Canaveral and KARS Park, around 9.9 miles away. Very much looking forward to landings at Vandenberg and closer proximity.

USLaunchReport claims to have gotten a shot of Stage 2 all the way up to SECO. The only problem is that they say SECO was when they lost visual T+7:15, which is far short for a RTLS mission (CRS-13, T+9:00).

Still no confirmation of success? Probably, this misson is so clandestine, that we are not supposed to know, whether it does separate, or doesn"t, or enters the 5th dimension to surprise the aliens there?

Assuming so. Since they don’t put out the patches to the media until success is confirmed.

BTW Elon's happy (reposted John Kraus's pic). I'll take that as a good sign.

You want to be inspired by things. You want to wake up in the morning and think the future is going to be great. That's what being a spacefaring civilization is all about. It's about believing in the future and believing the future will be better than the past. And I can't think of anything more exciting than being out there among the stars.

According to the time on twitter this was posted about 9 minutes after launch, so quite likely before spacecraft separation.

Here's my footage of the launch and landing, tracked with my telescope and custom software.  I think it came out extremely well.

My favorite remote camera image I took from last nights Zuma launch. My camera was setup at the launch pad and fitted with a Miops Smart Trigger. #spacex #Falcon9 #rocketlaunch #spacexlaunch @elonmusk @SpaceX @Teslarati @MiopsTrigger

Now catalogued as USA 280, 2018-001A, 43098.  Naturally no orbital data given.

Clearly don’t know how valid these sources are

Zuma satellite from @northropgrumman may be dead in orbit after separation from @SpaceX Falcon 9, sources say. Info blackout renders any conclusion - launcher issue? Satellite-only issue? -- impossible to draw.

I have been chasing this story as well. No comment from SpaceX as of yet.

SpaceX's communications statement to me just now...

“We do not comment on missions of this nature; but as of right now reviews of the data indicate Falcon 9 performed nominally.”

Eric Berger’s write-up:

Edit to add:

Article includes:

Quote
According to one source, the payload fell back to Earth along with the spent upper stage of the Falcon 9 rocket.

Eric also gives same quote as in Chris G’s post above.
