Based on what I've seen of the object on NASA TV, and FOX news...that object is way too big for a gap filler. Wayne Hale speculated that is what it could be, but the video doesn't compute with that. I'm sure we will find out soon enough.

Sorry for coming into the thread so late but does anyone have a still image of the object? I'm curious to see what it looks like. I read a third inspection may be ordered for the timeline tomorrow.

To me it looked like a rectangular flat piece that rotated slowly while drifting.

The crew took pictures of it I recall. So they will be coming down soon I hope.

From what I've been reading on this thread I've gathered that it's too small to be the shimstick Hale talked about. Is there a chance we're talking about the loss of a TPS tile here?

A bit too rectangular and flat for being a tile IMO.

Flame tranch has a story about this object perhaps hitting the starboard wing....
No discussion on that angle here... can anyone confirm that the sensors indicated an impact?

It's where all the top engineers etc. sit down and work out a problem, as such.

I read about sensors detecting an impact on a wing leading edge - I think on msnbc, but don't quote me on that. The story is out there, in any case. Fingers crossed...

We're not going to guess or speculate. I'm waiting for the day's MMT presentation, which we've been putting on L2 for 115, to give us the official rundown, then we'll do an article.

Could be what Wayne Hale described in the briefing - the leading edge sensor data dump indicated 8 small impacts over a period of about 2 minutes. They still have to research that data to match it to the orbiter events taking place during that time, since the impact sensor data isn't monitored or captured by MCC in real time - it's saved on orbit and dumped down only periodically.

Some media are falling over themselves with this.
We're watching the actual chatter going on and right now there seems to be an awful lot of speculation. We're waiting for the actual official comments presented to the MMT.
It's called being accurate.

SFN reports an impact on Atlantis' left wing 14 seconds after liftoff on September 9. Could it have been a tyvek cover that triggered the sensors?

Amen to that. Is the briefing still scheduled for NET 3 PM EDT?

The actual meeting of the MMT is 4 pm EDT, with the briefing at NET 6 pm EDT.
