I assumed the semi-active water cooling would just be having a resevoir of coolant and pumping it around the hot spots and less hot spots to spread the heat load out. I doubt they're spraying water out... seems unlikely to be effective. The fins themselves clearly don't need it.

edit: might not even need pumping if you essentially used giant heat pipes ... though I'm not sure if the physics holds up at scale for that to work, and if they'd be overly problematic in a rocket launch noise/vibration environment ...

Could be as simple as water soaked material backing the area needing cooled. I think I remember Lockheed had a water wick TPS design, but I can't find any info on it. Does anyone remember this?

John

Water wick TPS was planned for the McDonnell Douglas GRM-29A.

I don't remember seeing this on pre-block 5 boosters?

Looks like another umbilical connector? It would be kinda hilarious if they had to install yet another one just for - say - the cooling water vs modifying one of the existing two (e.g. ran out of room on them).

Back at @PortCanaveral and it appears they are removing the hydraulic arms. Perhaps the legs will fold up after this? @_TomCross_ are you around the area today? #Block5 #Falcon9

On second thought, with the hydraulic lines and arms removed, these legs are just going to be taken off. Sigh.

To be honest I'm a bit disapointed... I hoped that folding legs 2.0 won't require any part dismantling, including telescopic struts.

Musk said that they had to take this one apart to see how it flew, being the first Block 5. I expect this is just part of that inspection.

I wouldn't assume that doing that on the first block 5 booster means that's what it will always be. There may be an issue this time that will be fixed in future or maybe just not ready yet (eg transporter modification not yet complete).

Maybe you are right.
But for some reason I was expecting they will take the whole stage apart in some hangar on Cape or McGregor  or Hawthorne and not at the port.
Also FST's note about transporter not being ready yet for stage w/ legs might be some factor.

New legs, completely successful in the most important way, may still need a little work for easy retraction back in port (transport issues seem less likely to me).

And I still think they look great.

Meanwhile the processing of this booster is going pretty quickly - what's the quickest to horizontal so far?

The one I recall with the highest urgency was OTV-5, which landed at LZ-1 just before Irma hit. They got that one from the LZ, horizontal, and into the barn within something like 48 hours.

So even with leg removal, this could still be the quickest recovery?

Well that is disappointing. I thought one of the goals was to make it so they wouldn't have to remove the legs.  Unless they have to keep doing it until all the block 4s are used up and they can update the handling equipment.

The Block 4s aren't coming back to port. They will all be expended. There are no more new Block 4s.

A huge booster stage re-enters from space and lands impeccably on a small barge in the ocean. - And people express their disappointment that the legs are detached after landing.

I'm slightly reminded of this Louis CK monologue...

That reminds me of a thought I had on a Southwest flight where the WiFi wasn't working and someone complained.  I was thinking, we're at 36,000 feet going 550 miles per hour for a couple hundred dollars and you're disappointed about WiFi.  Lets ponder the magic of this situation for a moment.

They likely will never do it, but I'd love to see cradle landings for RTLS F9's.

That tech would save all kinds of time and weight.
