Can someone identify what these are?
« on: 03/04/2017 03:29 am »
Someone posted this photo of the assembly that clamps onto a landed F9 core interstage, for a crane cable to attach to. As seen here, the assembly is still attached to the F9 while being transported horizontally.

The question is, what the three boxes (arrows) are for, their purpose.

The tops of the boxes (when F9 is vertical) seem to have a color similar to solar cells.

Does anyone here know these are, and if so please elaborate as to what they do or are for.

The Roadie already answered this in the Facebook Group thread.

...they're just standard, generic outdoor electronic enclosures.

I can buy an enclosure box and use it for thousands of possible purposes, from a radio transmitter, to a clock, to WiFi, and so on.

The question is what is their purpose - on that lifting structure attached to the Falcon interstage. That was not answered AFAIK.

To say that  the metal boxes are generic enclosures is not really an answer to the intended question as to the purpose. Not to me anyway.

That is exactly the problem, it is impossible to know what they do just by looking at them. Since there are 3 of them, the same as the number of clamp mechanisms, they probably are in some way related to control of the clamps. Unless someone from SpaceX who happened to be involved with designing this specific item comes by, we won't get any more information than that.

Thank you. I figured it was probably more like that, and I speculated along those lines myself (three in the same orientation as the struts/attachment points).

As you said, the only people who really know, are likely SpaceX employees who are not in a position to say. And everyone else is left speculating.

Didn't really ask here for speculating, there's a bunch of those on the SpaceX Facebook group. Came here hoping someone might actually know, and could say.

If those who do know the purpose, can't say, that's fine.

Sorry for speculating George :-)
If they are serious about reuse wouldn't they need to have data loggers and sensors to record how these stages are handled after landing. That doesn't stop them being used for intelligent handling in real time either.
