1 PM PST is 4PM EST or Market Close.

Just saying...

That kind of market defensive tactic (for a partner?) is usually done on Friday. Monday sounds more aggressive.

But also the kind of thing where he'd want people to absorb the information before reacting to it... ...hmm.

...Relocating their manufacturing from Hawthorne?
SpaceX announcement, not Tesla. There is no reason for a non-publicly traded company to care about market close.

Of course if it was a partnership with Google on the satellites as someone suggested above, that is another story, but I doubt Google would care about playing market games with announcement timing.

Tesla stock went down quite a bit after both SpaceX rocket explosions. The companies are connected to some extent by their founder (and many investors).

LEO is the ocean, not an island (let alone a continent). We create cruise liners to ride the oceans, not artificial islands in the middle of them. We need a physical place, which has physical resources, to make our future out there.

Perhaps a formal partnering with Google for CommX.

Doubtful.  Remember, SpaceX needs their current commsat customers.  No need to turn paying customers into competitors until you have to.

So if anything, SpaceX would want to play this down in the media.  In fact, that's what Gwynne has been doing.  Whenever she's asked about this, she plays it down.

What if they were partnering with, say, SES?

Humm, perhaps its related to UAE's stated 100 year plan to settle Mars. I mean, the United Arab Emirates certainly has the cash to make it happen, is not shy about expending ridiculous amounts of it to accomplish whatever they want, and Elon has recently forged inroads there with Tesla...

(Note, somewhat clickbaity article...)

That seems like the kind of announcement that would have a positive impact on Tesla's stock price, which would make the 1:00 PST announcement time counterproductive.

Whatever it is, Elon either wants it in the news cycle, or to be the first to break the story, and he's cognizant of impact on another company's stock price.

Yes I think some sort of partnership/financial deal. If it was, say, spacesuits then I think SpaceX would say in advance what the topic is. I guess it could also be a big launch contract deal.

In terms of partnerships it's probably to do with a satellite constellation, but could be Mars-related.

If someone's managed to sight the site,  I'm sure we'd all appreciate a cite!  :)

Ready for some kind of Raptor firing? I also suspect that he'll be late with the announcement, because he pretty much always is.

Any indication that they will livestream at SpaceX.com? Can we get Helodriver to cover it for NSF and ask good questions?  :-)

Helodriver is in Uganda right now working his day job of flying airplanes.

Otherwise I'd be there. 8)

Some coincidences that might be completely unrelated to the announcement:
* President Trump will present his first budget proposal on February 27th
* http://orbitaloutfitters.com/ is down (at one point they were working on the SpaceX suits)
* Elon used the term "announcement", not "reveal"

Just saying...

SpaceX is not publicly traded, so what's the market got to do with it? (Tesla is OT!)

Perhaps there's an investment from, or a significant deal with, a quoted company?

Something boring, I expect.

I really wanted to write something snarky but:
A:) I couldn't think of anything
B:) Secretly I'm intrigued too

Well I don't think it's bad news, otherwise the WSJ would have deployed Andy on an all-nighter with a flask of strong coffee.

No overnight "We know, but we can't tell you" messages - which I've had a lot over the years.

Could be something "regular", could be something "amazing", could be Elon sat at home playing Overwatch with friends and saying "watch this, I can make Twitter melt down with just a few words" over an upcoming standard SpaceX presser.

Key for me is he said "SpaceX" announcement. Gave zero hints. Didn't follow it up, despite everyone asking for more. He doesn't do that for every SpaceX announcement, so it can't be something regular.

Do we have an idea where Elon was on Saturday? He sent the tweet at 8:10AM PST. If he was at home in California, this would be right after getting up on Sunday morning.

My guesses in order of likelihood:
* Suits
* Google partnership for CommX (reaction to the recent OneWeb announcement)
* Big launch contract
* external funding for ITS/Mars
