5 segment booster burn time
« on: 09/07/2006 07:32 PM »
How long would the SRBs burn with this extra segment of fuel? IMO given the case you'd have to extend the landing area of the boosters as when they do burn out and fall back from a higher altitude they will be alot father away than the current position is with the shuttle.

Anyway the shuttle boosters burn for what 2.5 minutes or so? What of the CEV/ HLV boosters?

It should be exactly the same, SRB's and most (if not all) large solids burn from the center out, not bottom to top. Think of it as setting fire inside of a donut hole.

Right.  And the igniter is actually at the top of the SRM.

I can't find the post now, but I remember something about a change in the grain/cut of the fuel for the 5-seg that actually WOULD increase the burn time to somewhere close to 150ish secs (~2.5 mins) from the 124 secs the 4-seg boosters do on the STS.  So it wouldn't be as a result of adding a segment, per se, but more because the burn rate of the fuel was modified.

That's a common misconception... I asked the same question here or on the space.com forum about a year ago.
