45th Space Wing successfully launches Falcon 9 JCSAT-16
By 45th Space Wing Public Affairs

CAPE CANAVERAL AIR FORCE STATION, Fla. - The U.S. Air Force's 45th Space
Wing supported the successful SpaceX Falcon 9 JCSAT-16 launch Aug. 14, 2016,
at 1:26 a.m. ET from Space Launch Complex 40 here.

The Falcon 9 rocket is carrying the JCSAT-16 communications satellite built
by Space Systems Loral for Tokyo-based SKY Perfect JSAT Corp. JCSAT-16 will
be a backup satellite for Ku-band and Ka-band communications services over
 the Japanese market.

A combined team of military, government civilians and contractors from
across the 45th Space Wing supported the mission with weather forecasts,
launch and range operations, security, safety and public affairs. The wing
also provided its vast network of radar, telemetry and communications
instrumentation to facilitate a safe launch on the Eastern Range.

"I am very proud of the entire Space Coast team. Their flawless work made
this mission a success," said Col. Walt Jackim, 45th Space Wing vice
commander and mission Launch Decision Authority. "Assured access to space
remains a difficult and challenging endeavor.  Today's launch reflects a
superb collaborative effort between commercial launch providers, allied
customers, and U.S. Air Force range and safety resources. The 45th Space
Wing remains a proud member of the Space Coast team and we look forward to
continuing our service as the 'World's Premier Gateway to Space.'"

Truly leaving all other space launch providers in the dust... They're beginning to look like typewriter companies in the 1990's.

Congrats, SpaceX, on a boring launch & landing!

One of the nice things about living in Alaska is that a flight like this occurs at a reasonable time on a Saturday night. Sorry East Coast/Europe folks. I am really impressed 5 landings and a record 8 successful launches this year. At this rate USA might have more launches than Russia for 2016 which I think would be a first since like 2000 or something

Congrats to SpaceX and everybody involved.
I had to wake up in the middle of the night for this launch but not regretting it. Looks more routine every time but a thrilling experience for me, nonetheless. Voted for 11 launches this year and 7 recoveries. It looks like an underestimate (if they keep launching and landing at this rate).

Stealing a phrase from the Olympics: "nailed it!"

10  10  9.8  10  10

Congrats SpaceX!!

(9.8 from that 'other' judge who deemed the landing not quite on center). But we forgive him.

Are there any updates on the 2nd stage? Has it reentered yet?

They don't do de-orbit burns on GTO missions at this point. They fully vent and passivate the stage and it will come down in a couple of months on its own.

Nice.. S2 is already dipping below the Karman line...
Will not take too long till it comes out of orbit... And cleans up after itself...  8)

I just pulled data from Space-Track in the last 10 minutes and this is what I get for S2:

83 x 34115 km x 20.948º

I'll go with Space-Track's numbers.

As for JCSAT-16 itself:

5582 x 35906 km x 10.845º

SpaceX typically does a standard brief retrograde orbit adjustment maneuver following the CCAM to encourage a timely return before they fully vent and passivate the stage.
