This is clearly not for Ax-2. Could be Ax-3, more likely Ax-4?

Also wonder why Axiom prefer VG over Blue Origin?

Virgin Galactic Signs Agreement with Axiom Space for Microgravity Research

Axiom Astronaut to Conduct Research and Train for International Space Station on Future Virgin Galactic Flight

TUSTIN, Calif.- November 3, 2022 - Virgin Galactic Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: SPCE) (the “Company” or “Virgin Galactic”), an aerospace and space travel company, today announced an agreement with Axiom Space, a U.S.-based commercial space company, to support a microgravity research and training mission. The Virgin Galactic spaceflight, tentatively scheduled for next year, will prepare an Axiom Space astronaut for an upcoming trip to orbit, while conducting microgravity research to supplement the work that astronaut will do on the International Space Station.

Virgin Galactic has a deep commitment to providing opportunities for research and scientific exploration in a suborbital space environment. Its pilot-controlled parabolic trajectory from a horizontal launch configuration can be adjusted to the specific needs of the payloads on board, making Virgin Galactic uniquely suited to fly both autonomous and human-tended experiments. The Company has flown research experiments on all previous spaceflights and is reserving 10 percent of its first 1,000 seats for science and technology research missions.

“Our spaceflight system offers a unique opportunity for research, and we’ve seen interest from a range of scientific and technology domains spanning from heliophysics to biological and physical life sciences,” said Virgin Galactic Vice President of Government Affairs and Research Operations Sirisha Bandla. “We are excited to work with Axiom Space as we continue to expand the ecosystem for microgravity research and build a pipeline for Virgin Galactic missions to support orbital space travel. Our commitment to research deepens our connection to planet Earth, enabling humanity to broaden our understanding of Earth and our place on it.”

Axiom Space is the commercial space industry’s only full-service orbital mission provider to the International Space Station, conducting full-service, end-to-end crewed missions for private astronauts, including both private individuals and those representing foreign governments. Axiom Space is expanding the international community of space explorers, helping to build human spaceflight programs, while building a permanent commercial space station in low-Earth’s orbit. Axiom Space has several partnerships with sovereign nations to expand their space capabilities including Turkey, Italy, Hungary and the United Arab Emirates.

“Our shared vision with Virgin Galactic to further enable human space exploration, increase scientific discovery and expand the international space explorer footprint makes this a great partnership,” said Axiom Space Chief Astronaut, Michael López-Alegría. “Virgin Galactic’s platform offers an incredible resource for future Axiom astronauts as they prepare for longer duration missions.”

LEOcloud and Axiom Space cooperate on edge processing in space

Quote from: SpaceNews
LEOcloud, a startup focused on space-based edge computing, announced a strategic collaboration agreement Nov. 15 with commercial space station provider Axiom Space.

Under the agreement, the companies will work together to develop and deliver space-based cloud services linked to terrestrial cloud computers.

“The value and benefit of edge computing on Earth is well known and understood,” Dennis Gatens, LEOcloud CEO and founder, told SpaceNews. “Extending that edge into space is the underlying value proposition here. Compute and data storage needs will be met in a local environment versus the application workloads run back on Earth.”

EVAs are near and dear to my heart so I'm excited for the new spacesuits. I applaud @NASA for utilizing a services contract w/@Axiom_Space that will allow the new fleet of suits to evolve & follow a shortened timeline. (Psst. If you need someone to test them out look no further!)

Axiom Space’s Mary Lynne Dittmar says at a Beyond Earth symposium this morning that the first Axiom module launch is now scheduled for late 2025. (It had been late 2024.) Will be followed in 6-8 months by a second module, a clone of the first.

The Axiom Space website has a counter counting down the years, months, etc. until the first Axiom Space Station module is launched. It shows almost four years from now. That is, the launch is not in 2025, but at the end of 2026.

The counter is years:days:hours:minutes:seconds which is 3 years and 11 days not 11 months. So that would be 12/01/2025.

So true..

A key point worth mentioning is the importance of cooperations between @Axiom_Space and @NASA. If we want to grow the LEO economy there has to be an open and honest communication and cooperation between space companies and agencies.

Hungary to spend $100 million on private astronaut mission to ISS

Quote from: SpaceNews
The Hungarian government plans to spend $100 million to send an astronaut to the International Space Station in two years through a deal with Axiom Space.

In a presentation at the European Space Agency’s ministerial council meeting Nov. 22, Péter Szijjártó, Hungarian foreign minister, said the country was in the middle of a process to select an astronaut to fly on a month-long mission to the ISS in late 2024 or early 2025.

Axiom Space announced in July it signed a memorandum of understanding with the government of Hungary regarding that country’s Hungarian to Orbit (HUNOR) program, which would fly a Hungarian astronaut to space on a future Axiom Space mission. That announcement, though, provided few details about when that person would fly.

South Korean pharma invests $50 million in Axiom Space

Quote from: SpaceNews
Boryung, a South Korean pharmaceutical company, has decided to invest $50 million in U.S. commercial space station developer Axiom Space’s Series C funding round.

The Seoul-based company announced the decision in a Dec. 21 regulatory filing to the Financial Supervisory Service, calling the deal a “forward-looking investment” aimed at establishing a business footing in space.

Boryung will take a 2.28% stake in Axiom by Dec. 30 in exchange for the investment, according to the filing. This follows Boryung’s $10 million investment in Axiom, disclosed in a May 16 regulatory filing, which gave the Korean company a 0.4% stake in the space station developer.

FWIW $50M for 2.28% values Axiom at $2.19B.
$10M for 0.4% values it at $2.5B.
The new purchase represents a 12% reduction in valuation.

It's rough times right now in the funding market. Companies are chasing fewer investors with less available capital. Investors can and do demand more shares for less money, which equates to lower valuations in the present day.

I'd focus on two things:

1. Closing a deal at all right now, at "only" a 12% decline, is more of a success than a failure.

2. Something about Axiom's projections (burn rate and free cash? AxS timeline?) meant that waiting for an easier investment market wasn't their preferred option.

Governments to be major customers of future Axiom Space private astronaut missions

Axiom Space says the customers for its upcoming private astronaut missions to the International Space Station are dominated by governments rather than individuals.
You want to be inspired by things. You want to wake up in the morning and think the future is going to be great. That's what being a spacefaring civilization is all about. It's about believing in the future and believing the future will be better than the past. And I can't think of anything more exciting than being out there among the stars.

Private share sales are a proxy for valuation, but are not directly a valuation when a company is not publicly traded. Shares may be sold above or below their 'value' based on multiple factors e.g. you may reduce share sale price to incentivise a larger investment, or increase it to cover the costs of multiple smaller investments, for the same company valuation. This can be seen in extremis when companies run simultaneous VC and crowd investment rounds, where the crowd investors will almost always pay quite a bit more per share (and often receive non-voting and/or lower preference shares) for an identical company valuation. Axiom may be more willing to cut a sweet deal for $50m than for $10m, especially in a market that is less willing to invest overall, even if their internal valuation has gone up (some $ better than no $).

In his talk last night, @CommanderMLA said Axiom is now in contract negotiations with NASA for the Ax-3 and 4 missions. Ax-3 could launch as soon as November and, like Ax-2, would likely have 2 gov't astronauts and one private astronaut. Ax-4 would be mid-2024, crew TBD.

I would expect Boryung"s investment gives them priorty access to Axiom facilities if there is high demand.
