What a beauty! @Axiom_Space ’s commercial space station, for which we will provide 2 pressurized modules, is already taking shape inside @Thales_Alenia_S ’ production area of #Turin. Our company is definitely pioneering the future of orbital infrastructures!

We are proud to work with UAE on this historic fight opportunity that will send the first astronaut from an Arab nation on a long-term mission to the @Space_Station.

This highlights our commitment to expand global access to microgravity.

Commercial companies (big and small) will be a fundamental part of space exploration and exploitation in the future.

The @NASA, after reviewing the #Ax1 mission, will require that the commander be a former NASA astronaut on all tourist flights to the #ISS . This limits the number of paying tourists that fly each time. Will it be profitable for companies? @Axiom_Space did not confirm if Ax-1 was.

I think that I remember the Axiom leadership saying in a press conference that they intended to have non former NASA astronauts (i.e. paying customers) as commanders of Axiom missions to ISS after Axiom-2.

Also, there was that rumor that Italian Air Force officer Walter Villadei might command Axiom-3.

So I assume these ideas did not fare well with NASA.

I think you mean those ideas did not fare well with the NASA Astronaut Office...

Maybe a request from International partners because of communication/chain of command concerns?

There might be legal issues, yes. After all I assume that a CSA, an ESA or a JAXA MS (examples : Chris Hadfield, Jean-François Clervoy or Koichi Wakata, for instance who are from the same age group as MLA) has the same qualifications as a NASA MS such as MLA. They seem explicitly excluded.

Also what is the limit. For instance (to be cheeky) would Yvonne Cagle qualify ? or Robb Kulin ?

Also it is a bit odd that twice Dragon commander Jared Isaacman would not.

On a side note, an ESA astronaut : Andreas Mogensen, has been selected as Crew-7 pilot which is going in the opposite direction.

The article about this in Space News is really good.

https://spacenews.com/nasa-revises-requirements-for-iss-private-astronaut-missions/

The private astronauts had some difficulty adapting to the zero g environment and integrating into the flow of work on the ISS. The crew already on-board the ISS had to devote much more time to helping the Axiom people than expected. In short, the Axiom crew had overbooked themselves, and NASA is requiring the mission commander be an experienced NASA astronaut in order to help them manage both their space adaptation and their time spent doing experiments on the ISS.

Edit to add: I expect this arrangement will change once Axiom has their module on the ISS and up and running.

So if that is the reason then, why is the requirement that they be a former NASA astronaut specifically?  Couldn't a former ESA astronaut (for instance) fill the same role?
