Axiom Space to train Italian Air Force’s Col. Walter Villadei as professional astronaut for future space mission

Quote
HOUSTON, January 11, 2022 – Axiom Space, Inc., the leader in human spaceflight and human-rated space infrastructure, announced Tuesday it has welcomed Col. Walter Villadei of the Italian Air Force (ItAF) to its headquarters in Houston to begin astronaut training at NASA’s Johnson Space Center (JSC) as part of Axiom’s professional astronaut services.

Through a partnership with KBR and NASA, Axiom, which trains and flies professional and private astronauts, is able to provide potential astronaut candidates access to facilities, instructors, and training at NASA. Candidates for flight complete Axiom’s training curriculum over many months in preparation to live and conduct meaningful work in space.

“I am thrilled, after being qualified as cosmonaut, to begin training as a professional astronaut with Axiom,” Col. Villadei said. “It is a unique opportunity to support the Italian role in the expansion of human space exploration, advancing the historical, strong partnership between Italy and the U.S. and opening up new possibilities in technology development as well as opportunities for new generations of scientists and engineers. As Axiom’s first international astronaut trainee, it is an honor to help establish a closer relationship between Axiom and Italy.”

Axiom Space and the Italian Air Force signed a contract on November 1, 2021, as a cornerstone step for preparing Col. Villadei to fly on a future Axiom research mission.

Villadei’s training adds yet another dimension to an important and growing partnership between Italy and Axiom Space. Italy’s Thales Alenia Space, building upon a rich heritage in human spaceflight – including construction of modules for the International Space Station – is currently constructing the primary structure for the first two modules of Axiom’s world’s-first commercial space station. Both modules will be shipped to Houston for installation of all operational subsystem and outfitted for crew and scientific use before their planned launch in 2024 and 2025.

Further discussions with Italian officials are underway to support broader collaboration with Italian industry and substantive participation on Axiom Station, whose launch and operation will open new markets in low-Earth orbit – an essential step in creating a sustainable space economy enabling the exploration of the Moon and Mars.

“Italy’s contributions to space and its collaboration with the United States go back decades and, as an important partner to Axiom, extend into the future,” Axiom President & CEO Michael Suffredini said. “We are excited about Italy’s new role as a partner in commercial space, beginning with Col. Villadei’s training, and eagerly anticipate future agreements deepening this relationship as we work together to drive low-Earth orbit settlement and commercialization for scientific and technological development.”

About Axiom Space

Axiom Space, the premier provider of human spaceflight services and developer of human-rated space infrastructure, is guided by the vision of a thriving home in space that benefits every human, everywhere. Founded in 2016, Axiom is opening new markets in low-Earth orbit through operating end-to-end missions to the International Space Station while privately developing its successor – a permanent commercial destination in Earth’s orbit that will sustain human growth off the planet and bring untold benefits back home.

You want to be inspired by things. You want to wake up in the morning and think the future is going to be great. That's what being a spacefaring civilization is all about. It's about believing in the future and believing the future will be better than the past. And I can't think of anything more exciting than being out there among the stars.

Some new images posted by Axiom at: https://www.axiomspace.com/axiom-station

"primary structures of Axiom Station's first module. The first pieces of fabricated flight hardware, shown below, are beginning to come together. In early 2023, the assembled module will join us in Houston where we will complete final assembly and integration to prepare for a late 2024 launch of the first section of the next-generation platform for breakthrough innovation in low-Earth orbit."

The image on the upper left corner suggests to me that these are high (?) fidelity test articles for their first mock-up and fit check. I suspect that a space-qualified bulkhead wound not be displayed on boxes!

In conjunction with Space Entertainment Enterprise (SEE), the movie studio working with Tom Cruise to film a movie in space, Axiom is developing a new inflatable/expandable module called the Space Arena (also called SEE-1) which will be "the world’s first content and entertainment studios and multipurpose arena in space." The plan (according to SEE's website) is to film "live sports events, motion pictures, live and pre-produced television programs including specials and series, concerts and other forms of entertainment" in this module (so it's not just for Tom Cruise). The timeline is pretty rapid, with SEE-1 scheduled to launch in December 2024, only three months after the first Axiom module (to which SEE-1 will attach) launches in September 2024.

ISS could use more docking ports.

Axiom's general plan seems to accomplish this. Each "Axiom Hub" (the first two modules will both be of this type) has six CBM ports, and they'll launch the second one with a CBM-to-IDSS adapter attached. Their third module will be the "Axiom Lab," with a CBM at either end, but one of those ends will have another CBM-to-IDSS attached to it.

Of course, between the Space Arena, Axiom Earth Observatory (cupola), Power Tower, and actually linking all the modules together, not all of those CBMs will remain available, but overall it'll be a net addition to the ISS.

Couple more articles on S.E.E. and the module.

The Hollywood Reporter article mentions that the whole Axiom station will detach from ISS in 2028, has this date been mentioned before?

It was in the tweet yg1968 linked regarding yesterday's NASA Commercial Space Division presentation, so at the very least we can consider it official from NASA's perspective.

At 20ft diameter this is large open space. Great for visitors to play in as well. Can also be used for testing propulsion on space suits and other space vehicles.

I have my doubts about whether it'll be anything like the perfect sphere shown in their concept art, however. The specifics of how expandables actually expand aside, doesn't it need a second hard point somewhere for the Canadarm to grab onto? Since I assume that's how it gets berthed into place.

SpaceLink Names Axiom Space as Implementation Partner

for Demo of its End-to-End Relay Service on the ISS

McLean, Va. – Feb. 17, 2022 – SpaceLink, a company that is building the communications superhighway for the growing space economy, announced it has named Axiom Space as its Implementation Partner for demonstration of its end-to-end communications relay service on the International Space Station. SpaceLink completed an agreement with the Center for the Advancement of Science in Space (CASIS), manager of the International Space Station (ISS) National Laboratory, last year, and signed its subcontract with Axiom last week, making Axiom the liaison to ensure that all interfaces and system requirements meet NASA standards.

The SpaceLink demonstration will validate the use of a 10 Gigabit per second optical terminal for real-time voice, video, and data relay for ISS crew, onboard systems, and experiments. Last August, SpaceLink announced that it was selected by CASIS for a demonstration on the ISS under an agreement that is now fully executed.

“Team members who bring years of ISS experience to Axiom have made Axiom the ideal partner for our demonstration said David Bettinger, SpaceLink CEO. “As with many developments that begin with government support, commercial space stations and the networks that serve them are the future.  It is an honor to work with the ISS National Laboratory and Axiom to further this important transition.”

As Implementation Partner, Axiom will leverage its expertise in working with NASA and the ISS National Laboratory to support mission integration, launch, and operations for the SpaceLink payload. Axiom will support SpaceLink as a liaison with NASA and will lead safety reviews to ensure SpaceLink hardware meets the requirements for the ISS.

The SpaceLink relay network is designed to pick up where NASA’s Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) leaves off and go beyond with unprecedented capability that leverages the latest technology advances in optical communications.

“High-speed communication will be a critical component for the future where people live and work in space,” said Axiom President and CEO Michael Suffredini, “Axiom looks forward to collaborating with SpaceLink and supporting its relay network, beginning with this important demonstration on the ISS.“

With the proliferation of spacecraft in Low Earth Orbit, the demand for fast, continuous, high-capacity connectivity continues to grow. SpaceLink is designed to help close the business case for commercial space stations, Earth observation companies, satellite servicers, launch vehicles, space tugs, and lunar communications. It also meets requirements for the U.S. Government and close allies that want to leverage secure industry solutions to maximize capabilities.

About SpaceLink

SpaceLink will help advance humanity to a new age of space commerce, exploration, environmental awareness, and security. The Always in Sight™ data relay system provides global coverage to empower space system operators to maximize use of their assets. SpaceLink Corporation is headquartered in the Washington DC area and has offices in Silicon Valley, California. It is a wholly owned U.S. subsidiary of Electro Optic Systems Holdings Limited, a public company traded on the Australian stock exchange.

I know there are a lot of threads about this now, but nothing specific for Axiom.  If Russia pulls out of ISS in 2024, is there anything Axiom can do in two years to replace the attitude control and reboosting functions?
It seems like suddenly there is a very real need for their hardware.  SpaceX can provide a Heavy.  Is there anything useful that can be done?  I'd love to know what they're thinking.

Almost any thruster array can theoretically be used to help desaturate the gyros and potentially for reboost. We know the Axiom module needs 6 axis control in order to rendezvous with ISS for berthing.

Is this capability shut down after berthing?

Speaking of, what prevents an Axiom module for working as a free-flyer space station? Lack of long-lived attitude control? (Thrusters alone, without CMG, are very thirsty.)
