So, another company training and launching the astronauts before building and testing the hardware they will eventually use. The latter part would be the harder part.

IMO, Axiom is reaching the same conclusion as I have, and will eventually (try to) partner up with SpaceX to use Starship instead of their own space station.

edit: ah, I stand corrected, with the post below. Let's see where this goes. Team space and all that  :)

What Comes After the International Space Station? Funding for the world's premiere orbital laboratory won't last forever. Its end could usher in a new era of commercial space stations.

Sounds like Somebody wants the TransLab IP without the Bigelow Baggage.... Take over, merger?
Axiom are in business of owning and operating stations not building.
SNC have developed their own inflatable technology, maybe case of Axiom commissioning them to build it.

A multinational crew composed of three private astronauts and @CommanderMLA have now officially signed with Axiom. In other words: the first private crew to go to orbit in human history – the crew of Ax-1 – has been assembled. Mission launches NET late 2021. More details soon.

Axiom Station's fifth design analysis cycle is complete, introducing a significant change to the world's first commercial space station.

The former Node and Hab have been combined into the Axiom Hub module, the central nexus of future human activity in Earth’s orbit.

The combined node+hab designed is pretty great because you can design a single spacecraft capable of nearly unlimited expansion due to 6 docking ports. In practice nobody has built space statio habitats as a series product yet.

Their timeline of 2024 is pretty far into the future considering that Commercial Crew is operational now and already capable of servicing commercial modules.

And if Starship is successful the design becomes instantly obsolete. I hope they have a plan to pivot to 8 meter modules somewhere.

Note that the Conical PMA/IDA has a grapple fixture and CBM ring mating plane allowing it to be relocated after launch to expose its ACBM ring to allow further AxH's to be attached stacking research and other modules around its concentric ports.

As long as goverments fund research on ISS, it's as much a liability as it is a boon for the shakedown mission. They probably want as little overlap as possible to properly min/max that.

And it won't hurt to see what Starship does in that time. One a Starship is fitted with a Mars-mission-rated ECLSS, putting purpose built modules on a Starship could quickly become far more expensive than just renting a Starship.

2024 is just over 3years aways, which is aggressive timeline to design and build space station module. They are designing module to be flown on current or near term LVs, most likely Vulcan and NG.

Designing module that can only be flown by SS in 3-4 years time means whole business  is dependent on its SS success. Not way to run business.

New Glenn has been identified as the launch vehicle selected to fly the first two modules of the Axiom station - https://www.reddit.com/r/BlueOrigin/comments/hk72xe/interview_with_the_module_manufacturer_of_the/

How are the Axiom modules supposed to translate from the booster to ISS? Do they incorporate a tug?

All the Axiom modules have their own propulsion AFAIK.

They mentioned the capability to autonomously undock from ISS and freefly in case anything happens to ISS sometime.

They‘re also intended to become a solo space station once the ISS is decommissioned.

Before the recent design change [merging the two different designs into one]
the axiomspace website explained the designs and answered your question. I would
imagine that the updated site would continue to do so.

Each module has propulsion to avoid the need for a tug and allows
independent motion after ISS is retired.
