SpaceX Landing Montage Video
« on: 04/10/2016 05:57 pm »
Hey, NSF!
Over the weekend, I put together this little montage of all SpaceX landing attempts and experiments, let me know what you think!
Overall editing took ~20 hours, this is my first 'big' project I've worked on.

I'd appreciate feedback, and anything that I could improve in the future!

Awesome. Very good job. I would suggest you include a credit screen with your name, as this will be re-posted many times and places I expect. As it is now, it looks like it is a SpaceX product, the way it ends with their name.

I'm fine with it being reposted, as long as it's linked to my youtube page. Just want more people to see it!

I will add a small annotation near the end though, glad you enjoyed it! :)

Oops, now that I look again I realize that I missed seeing the (Fan-made) note on the opening screen.

Just added that!

You're right, don't want anyone confusing this for an official SpaceX thing.

What a great video!! And it's awesome that you included the CRS-3 video reconstruction that was done right here in NSF!

How could I not? It's awesome how much everyone here was able to restore.

I wanted to make sure I got every experimental flight. The only flight I missed was Thiacom 6 (High velocity reentry test), because I couldn't find any footage from it!

(Also all the grasshopper and F9R tests, but I couldn't possibly put all those in there.)

That's super cool and shows how far we've come in such a short period. I'll pass that around over here.

I hope you will have to edit it soon when the landing video from SES-9 gets released.

Well done! SpaceX has came along way since the 250m Grasshopper flight in April 2013, to landing on the ASDS a little less than 3 years later. Excellent progress!

Nice video. Was really hoping someone would do this. :)

Might be good to see an animation of the flight profile and a title/slide explaining how this approach returns 9 out of the 10 engines to be re-used*, and stops a spent stage from landing on any unsuspecting whales ;)   (polluting the ocean).

The extra context would be for those casual observers who can't see the significance of this approach (if/once it is ultimately successful). Not everyone watching this is a 'spacecadet'. Some may appreciate this like a cool, but essentially random, extreme-sports montage (or best fails video).

*and the impact on cost to orbit

This is a great example of persistence and incremental development, but such persistence  is better appreciated when contextualised by a 'sexy'/aspirational goal of consequence.

That video is awesome, but what stroke me was the music you picked for the video - M83, midnight city (original clip here - well worth a look by itself)

It's already a great song by itself, and spacex makes it even better.

Great video!  Very complete, which I liked.  Helps reinforce that this wasn't an accidental success, but rather the result of a lot of unsuccessful previous attempts.

Only production note I might suggest is to have the music continue at a low-level under the applause at the LZ-1 landing, for continuity.  And then once you've set that pattern in the mind of the viewer, we sort of expect to hear some applause audio under the CRS-8 landing as well.  You could add that at a much lower level, to keep the swelling music foremost, just to maintain consistency.

Awesome video!
One suggestion I would make is replacing the Grasshopper 2 video with the one which used the grid fins. The grid fins was a major breakthrough which enables precise landing.

In the absence of additional SES-9 video, maybe find a good still picture of the hole in the deck?  :P

Jack, great video! Please make sure the music is bought and paid for or, even better, open-source - the Copyright Trolls may make YouTube take it down if it isn't. There's *lots* of properly licenced free-to-use music out there, some very high quality. I regularly make industrial videos and tend to use Kevin McLeod's excellent *free* compositions - all he requires from you is a brief on-screen credit. Don't take any risks, or your work is wasted!

Hey, thanks for your tip!

The music studio already placed a copyright claim on it, so now they may show some ads on the screen as the video plays.
That's it though! They've monetized it for themselves, so I don't think they plan on taking it down.

Cheers.

Suggestion: add clips of mission control room erupting into cheers during both landings.

Personally I don't think you should use any of the suggestions to add still screens amidst all that action, nor to add people among all those rockets, even if moving, unless you can avoid disrupting and compromising the flow with as much skill as you showed putting the rocket action together.

The video seemed next to flawless to me, well done, but I did like cscott's idea about how the music and applause could be proportioned for the Orbcomm landing. I kind of wondered where the music went for a second. Reversing that proportion for the CRS-8 landing sounds creative, although not as important as the other.

Unfortunately youtube is blocked at my work (bandwidth problems for 15,000, no its 24,000 now, employees all piped through corporate hq in Canada all watching streaming videos at one time during work hours, yada yada yada). All i get is a 'blacklisted' box in the linked youtube video space. Yes, i am not able to view ANY of the linked youtube videos in the forums, which does at times become quite frustrating, as the links have shorthand language and the click-throughs just get me a 'blocked web site' message from my company firewall.

Based on the comments, i'd love to see it (on my phone, burning data up).

Cheers!
