LEGO Space Shuttles
« on: 02/20/2016 07:41 pm »
This week I found a Lego mini shuttle at Walmart and built it.  I like it, it's a neat little craft.  Building it helped me de-stress from work, and I'm going to get the bigger set tomorrow.  These are the CITY sets, I wish Lego would reissue its big Discovery plus HST set (STS-31) or do some other NASA Shuttle.
I'll even excitedly look forward to "flags and footprints" and suborbital missions. Just fly...somewhere.

The Utility shuttle is fun.  Highly recommended if you want to get someone hooked on space and LEGO as it's quite economical
There is another shuttle available in the current (2015) line, IIRC
http://brickset.com/sets/60080-1 but it's a lot more, I think MSRP is 120ish
http://images.brickset.com/sets/large/60080-1.jpg?201505131051

There's also a fun little mini build
http://brickset.com/sets/40127-1/Space-Shuttle
http://images.brickset.com/sets/images/40127-1.jpg?201502270859
but that one's very hard to find.

This query will find most, but not all shuttle models (it misses 60080 since shuttle isn't in the name) LEGO has done, including my profile pic: 1682,  and my favorite one: 6339

Thank you for the links Lar. The utility shuttle just might find its way to my Lego-crazy little nephew.

Here's a shot of the utility mini shuttle next to Curiosity which I built a while back.

The CT/MLP amalgam in this one isn't even as accurate as the one in 6339, in my view. But it does have a cab (although not double ended like the real CT)

Someone in KLUG has built a Saturn V (at a much larger scale, it's taller than I am) with a very nice CT/MLP although that too is a bit undersized for the vehicle it's carrying... I'll see if I can find pics.

Well, since we are showing off Lego, here are mine.

1; Shuttle that I made my own markings for Atlantis.
2: A Chris Hadfield figure I bought online.
3: The Curiosity Rover.  This is the one sold by Lego Ideas.  I made the first one by purchasing the parts from Brick Link and downloading the instructions.  I also built the "Skycrane" that the designer made.  But it was so delicate, it collapsed.
4: A little Moon Rover.  The one figure in the back is the old Lego astronaut.

Saturn Vs

This one is by Ryan McNaught, who IIRC is Aussie, and he's a Certified LEGO Professional (does LEGO stuff for a living) and it's crazy crazy huge. Has a MLP but no CT

Personally this one impresses me more because it's done by a hobbyist, John Wolfe, of the Kenosha LEGO Users Group (KLUG)

I think I recognise that show, my booth is on the other side of the hall.
Here's a podcast interview with John

I had the old Shuttle Adventure set, but most of it was 'lost' during my last move.  >:(

Luckily the Orbiter was in another box, so I modded it up a bit so I could display it vertically. Now I just need to get started on my to-scale lego ISS.  ;D

A LEGO ISS model was sent to the ISS and an astronaut (Satoshi Furakawa) put it together. Just like the real ISS, it could only be built in microgravity, as at 1G it would not stay together.

http://www.nbcnews.com/id/46523404/ns/technology_and_science-space/t/astronaut-builds-lego-space-station-inside-real-life-space-station/

it's underscale for the LEGO minifig scale shuttle models, but is probably pretty close for that microfig scale shuttle I gave a link to earlier in the thread...

I may have to get out my built 1682 and 6339, they're in storage.

I have a MISB 6339 Shuttle Launch Pad and 6544 Shuttle Transcon II at my condo. Doubt I'll ever build them as they are worth too much MISB (I have other copies)

BTW someone did a better list of LEGO shuttles than I did

Another one for younger LEGO fans (age 5+):

60226 Mars Research Shuttle

Got this today for my 4, soon to be 5, year old. He really enjoyed making it and I think it’s pretty good. Above LEGO video nicely shows all the different elements. There’s a pilot and a payload specialist and room for both in the shuttle together with the small sample retriever ‘satellite’. Cool little rover with mini-copter too.

I swear he chose it & didn’t take much persuading on my part ... ;)

My latest Saturn-V-scale LEGO space build is both finished and a work-in-progress:

@KingsKnightBrks' space shuttle design is the biggest build I've done yet, so much so that I had to break it into elements: the Orbiter is done; the external tank and SRBs are yet to come.
