Because the first stage has a hydrogen-fueled engine, I'm expecting a Delta IV-like fireball to erupt at ignition and char the base of the vehicle by the time it lifts off.

That'll depend on their hydrogen mitigation and engine startup sequence. Shuttle and Ariane V didn't/don't have massive fireballs with their hydrogen first stages.

That second stage make me do a bit of a double take, very 5 m DCSS with the different size tanks and trusses.

Yes, the LM-5 is definitely heavily inspired by the Delta IV.

Note I wrote "inspired by", not "copied from". There are clearly many differences, but many similarities:
 - Same core diameter and propellants as Delta IV
 - A very similar looking upper stage
 - payload capacity that somehow manages to match the Delta IV Heavy

Coincidence? I think not. They wanted a LV with similar capability as Delta IV Heavy.

Surely that's partly convergent evolution? If you design for similar payloads and same fuels, the volumes aren't going to be significantly different. Zenit and Falcon 9 are pretty comparable in dimensions as well.

Still no signs of drop zone notices, but this road closure notice around the space center seems to hint at very much the same launch time rumored - around 10 am UTC on November 3: http://news.ifeng.com/a/20161031/50181815_0.shtml

GP or others if you could check the Chinese version on this site and see if its newer that would be great.

The launch pad today from one member of that Chinese spaceflight forum I follow:

Given the importance of this flight to the future of China's flagship spaceflight programs, I'm moving this to the live section now, despite I haven't been able to find any live coverage links yet. I very much do expect that some of the media will be there like with CZ-7 in June (with the rocket so.....untested I doubt CCTV will follow it live - whether they will follow up with detailed coverage after launch like with CZ-7 is unknown), so finger's crossed for good coverage.  ;)

BTW if the launch goes right at 10:00 UTC, then this will happen exactly at sunset at the pad.  8)

Oldie but goodie video from CZ-5 tests, including a slow-motion ignition of the two YF-77 cryogenic first stage engine cluster (~1m into the video) and other cool snippets such as what looks like a destructive test of the LOX tank (0.12), booster separation tests (0.24) and fairing separation trials (0.31).

Will this launch be carrying the YZ-2 tug or is it just the basic CZ-5(A) version?

Since it's launching eastwards [into darkness] there ought to be humongous visual effects about 800-2000 km down track. Who lives along there?

Wonder if this navigational warning has anything to do with CZ-5 1st stage debris?

WESTERN NORTH PACIFIC.
MARIANA ISLANDS.
HAZARDOUS OPERATIONS.
DNC 12.
1. HAZARDOUS OPERATIONS 022200Z TO 031200Z NOV
WITHIN 12 MILES OF 16-01-06N 146-03-35E.
2. CANCEL THIS MSG 031300Z NOV 16.//

Authority: COMCOGARD SECTOR GUAM 745/16 020549Z NOV 16.

Date: 020744Z NOV 16
Cancel: 03130000 Nov 16

Edit in June 2017: As the same navigational warning was published at various times not related to any known launches, I now think that this one was a pure coincidence..

This will be a very important vehicle for China's future ambitions in space. An uprated version some years down the road would be capable of sending decent sized payloads to the Moon in dual-launch scenarios. But we'll see this tough mission done first before worrying about more ambitious futures.

It looks like a very capable rocket, I'm particularly fascinated at how for LEO payloads the sustainer core goes all the way to orbit.
The core in the LM-5B configuration can take 23 mt of payload direct to LEO, with about a 4m stretch they could deliver that mass as usable prop.   Or by reusing the upper stage as a tug like ULA's ACES could launch without upper stages for GTO missions, splitting capacity between prop and payload.
They could also build one massive wet workshop space station!
