As an anthology film based in the Star Wars story universe, Rogue One offers a grittier take on the events leading upto the first Star Wars movie and the Battle of Yavin:

Think Saving Private Ryan or the Dirty Dozen set in the Star Wars universe.

The movie will apparently center around the rebel attempt to steal the plans for the Deathstar, and will include Darth Vader as a villain, although he won't be the primary antagonist in this story. Likewise, there will be no Jedi featured in this movie.

The shot of the Death Star in the background is bugging me a bit. I can't work out how the geometry of the shot works in my head, it looks like it's either embedded in the ground or the size of Jupiter.

Other than that, I'm very interested to see how this turns out. I imagine they'll get James Earl Jones back to voice Vader. Then again, it's been 10 years since he did the voice for Vader's brief masked part in Episode III.

I'm actually more excited about this than I was about SW7. No baggage from previous characters, or wondering if old stars will return.

Dare I say, it could be "A new hope" for the Star Wars franchise?

I think one problem is that the teaser clip is actually phonecam-recorded footage of what was played at the fan convention, and therefore what we see isn't the whole screen/horizon.

Well, they pulled Frank Oz out of retirement to do some brief lines from Yoda in the Force Awakens (during Rey's flashback), so I'd imagine that James Earl Jones could do Vader just as easily. Darth Vader won't be the main villain in this movie, he'll just be the one cracking the whip over the main baddies.

Ahem. This movie is the prequel to SW episode IV. The characters in this movie pass onto Leia the plans for the Emperor's Moon Toy.

Wonder which of the Rogue One cast will survive the movie and who gets the spectacular demise scenes. Since the one girl in the cast is one of the leads. Hmm.

Someone on one of the IMDB discussion threads for this movie suggests that we have Rey's mom in the movie as the future Mrs Skywalker. It is convoluted enough to be plausible.

Actually he's been voicing Vader fairly recently in the animated spinoff show Rebels.
