TV today is a bit weird with all this on demand stuff, but I just hope it's decent.

Please not another DS9. Never liked that.

A pity about the intolerable Stormfront types ranting about subjects which do not impact them in any meaningful manner in the comment section. It's Star Trek, for God's sake; the show that had a Russian, Anglo-American, African-American woman, a Japanese man and an Alien averse to violence flying a Starship together only four years after civilisation nearly ended in the Cuban Missile Crises. Humans in the Star Trek universe reproduce with other sentient species and nobody bats an eyelid, but God forbid the possibility of nonhetrosexual humans.  I find it baffling how people can get hung up over such subjects and yet openly embrace humanity peacefully coexisting as one entity, amid a federation of unique, liberated species who are equally cherished, yet don't apply the show's fundamental principles to their actual lives. Urgh. The absence of people segueing into offtopic character dissections of the lives of other people is one of the qualities which make Nasaspaceflight one of the best forums I have ever had the pleasure of browsing.

I'm hoping that the universe takes the time to venture into a selection of ships and characters which we haven't witnessed yet. It's a vast continuum and it'd be intriguing to witness the story arc of a crew other than that of the Enterprise. Venturing into the timeline post Voyager's return to Earth would be fascinating, as would a Star Trek episode set before the invention of warp tech, or very slightly afterwards (pre NX class). Let's go on journeys that play upon more than nostalgia.

Edit: For the record, I loved Voyager and The Next Generation, along with most of the Star Trek movies. DS9 was probably my least favourite due to the immersion shatteringly poor camera work.

It will probably be much more like the new movies than DS9. A number of the people associated with the new series worked on the Abram's Trek movies. It is more than likely that this series will be set in the Abramsverse (which is a good or bad thing depending on your point of view).

Honestly I am hoping they do that "Captain Worf" series that Michael Dorn was angling for.

I cheer for both NASA and commercial space. For SLS, Orion, Falcon 9, Falcon Heavy, Dragon, Starship/SH, Starliner, Cygnus and all the rest!
I was blessed to see the launch of Space Shuttle Endeavour on STS-99. The launch was beyond amazing. My 8-year old mind was blown. I remember the noise and seeing the exhaust pour out of the shuttle as it lifted off. I remember staring and watching it soar while it was visible in the clear blue sky. It was one of the greatest moments of my life and I will never forget it.

That would certainly be intriguing, although Worf isn't a character with an enormous range of emotional expression.  He'd have to be excellently acted.

I wonder how much the success of "The Big Bang Theory" played into this decision? This new Trek should begin as that ends and keep some of the same audience.

Yes!!

But sadly, it looks like the Kelvin blew up in this Star Trek reboot.  It would be so easy to shed the Buck Rogers of the reboot and get back to the mix of serious and fun of TOS. But that would not pander to the modern audience and that scares the dollars out of Hollywood.

Hope not!  With any luck, they'll leave the movie universe to the movies & get back to the prime universe for the new series.  There are ways ...

I don't think it will happen, but I would like to see a series set towards the end of this century where humans are firmly entrenched in space and technology will be beyond what we can somewhat accurately guess at, but not so far out as to be pure fantasy.

If it was only that simple. But the Kelvin was destroyed! ;)

So the general plan being, in order to make CBS's video on demand platform profitable, make every trek fan use it to watch this new series?  :P

Alex Kurtzman's involvement pretty much wiped out my hopes.

Yes.

Apparently the kick off episode will be broadcast on The CBS Network worldwide including America. Then, the international outlets will be able to broadcast the show but the U.S.A. viewers can only see it pay per month CBS Watch.

I have never liked watching TV or movies from streaming.  That is why I bought a big TV!  If this is only available online, I will just keep waiting for the DVD release.

That's why you hook up your big TV to a computer. I have a 90" projector screen home theater setup and no cable TV subscription. TV is dead.

I'm holding out hope that Alex Kurtzman will be a more hands-off producer and they bring on board a really good writing team. If he's heavily involved in any creative capacity, then yeah, the series is dead (Jim).

Also, as far as DS9 goes, they could do much worse than trying to shoot for characters with that much depth. They developed organically as the series progressed, in ways that the other shows never managed. Take that, and put it in a more starship based environment, and they'll do just fine.

Something else I won't see because of a pay wall.  I've decided to only do one pay service at a time.  Right now it the one that starts with an N and ends with an x.

Plus, I spent far too many hours in my youth watching Star Trek (the original) and then watching it being re-run over and over and over.
