Asteroid Mining Vessel Thor
« on: 10/28/2015 11:00 am »
As a bit of a change of pace from working on real space subjects, tried this conjectural asteroid mining vessel. AsGuard Mining Corp also provide asteroid deflection services, hence the name and all their spacecraft are named after Norse gods, this example being AMV Thor. The asteroid was rendered in Terragen 2.

Brilliant quality renders, and a cool looking spacecraft. The only thing that's niggling me is the thickness and shape of the solar panels.

Many thanks. They aren't renders though - they are photos of a physical model.

The arrays were originally a bit thinner, but unfortunately we modellers have gravitiy to contend with and they wilted a bit so I needed to make them a bit thicker to keep them flat and straight. A spacecraft this size would have array panels on which  the solar cells would be attached and the panels could be as thick as you like. Look at a Soyuz panel edge on and they are quite thick.

Ah, didn't even consider that it was a physical model. Great work! You did actually fool me into thinking this was high quality CGI work. If only George Luacs could have shared in this revelation when he made the prequels...

Thanks. I wouldn't have a clue how to do CGI. It's all a bit of a black art to me. Never cease to be amazed at what these guys can produce.

Space is hard immensely complex and high risk !

That is an amazing model!!  Beautiful photos.  What scale is it, and I know you took construction photos this time, right? lol!!

Thanks, guys.

Scale is probably around 1/144 as I used Revell ISS kit parts. Sorry no construction shots as it was meant to be a quick and dirty build, but nothing really to write home about anyway. Starting at the front, used a 1/32 CM heatshield and SM inside bulkhead. Spine made from plumbing parts (though as you don't see them that was a waste of money - could just have used a tube), Revell ISS truss section parts and a cut back Revell A-wing for the engine section. The containers are male lighting connectors from B&Q. The drilling rig both in the retracted and deployed positions are Revell Republic Star Destroyer engines. Arrays obviously plasticard with printed slar cell details.

Very nice.  It reminds me of something that should gave been in the 2001 or Space:1999 universes.

Thank you. The solar arrays were inspired by Anderson vehicles such as the Altares and 1999 ones.
