Some are bound for happiness, some are bound to glory, some are bound to live with less, who can tell your story?

Hmm the earlier reports seems to be wrong, because someone said that it has already been launched!  ::) Please wait for the official announcement.....  ;)

In the mean time, I'm trying to summarize things up on Jilin-1 with info available on Chines forums:P

Basically, Jilin-1 (a.k.a. Changguang-1) is the first Chinese commercial Earth observation satellite constellation, built in co-operation by the Changchun Institute of Optics (which is one of the institutes of the China Academy of Sciences) and Harbin Institute of Technology, with support from the government of Jilin Province. They are apparently going to spin off a new company to operate them.

Jilin-1 consists of 4 satellites:

1 x 420 kg class main satellite (specifications on graph 1)
1 x 65 kg class agile imaging demonstration satellite (specifications on graph 2)
2 x 95 kg class video imaging satellite (specifications on graph 3)

Apparently this is only the beginning of an aggressive plan: this enterprise plans to get up to 60 satellites by 2020 (re-visit period of 4-5 hours) and up to 137 satellites by 2030 (re-visiting one point on Earth every 10 minutes)! That's even more grandiose than Skybox and Planet Labs.....  :P

Some photos:

(first two are apparently a mock up of the payload adapter showing how the 4 satellites are launched together; next 4 is of the Jilin-1 main satellite)
