I wonder why the returned stage has a white band in the middle with less soot than above and below.

Liquid oxygen vs. RP-1 tanks I think.

That's the area of the 1st stage LOX tank, isn't it?  Probably ice or at least some condensation keeping the soot from sticking, would be my guess.

The LOX tank goes the whole length up to the interstage, the soot band is on only the part of the LOX tank, that's a bit puzzling.

The LOX is cold.  Soot is condensing out on the cold part of the tank, but less so on the much warmer RP1 tank.

Any guesses on what the hose is for that the two workers are holding?

If you look at the "double streak" long exposure picture, it seems to show such a maneuver.  The return streak looks shallower, as if it's walking the IIP from off shore to the pad.

Yes, but don't forget the rectilinear distortion in the wide angle lens. Something in the corner of such an image can look quite crooked and still be vertical in reality.

Agreed.   Hence my hedge...  but the difference is really noticeable, and the streaks are not THAT far from each other.

I also realize there's an angle change wrt the camera, irrespective of the lens effect.

Still though.

Here is another image, from SpaceX. It looks much more vertical from this point of view. It is coming in a bit from the side (the nearer streak is the landing), but it is hard to tell how much is from the trajectory and what is from a divert maneuver.

From the "pencil landing" graphic it looked like most/all of the divert was before the landing burn, ie done by grid fins.

If the white part is the LOX tank, what's the ~10 m of stage between the white part and the interstage for? The upper dome of the LOX tank is probably about 2 m of that, so what's the rest for?

Is it just me or does it looks like there's some cracking under where the landing leg was on the left side of Elon's video?

The soot comes from the boostback and reentry burns, I'd assume (since the rocket is flying into its own plume for those), so maybe the top part of the tank has warmed up a bit with most of the LOX already having been used.
All aboard the HSF hype train!  Choo Choo!

The LOX tank goes all the way up to the interstage. The difference in appearance may be for a different coating for the outside or inside of that part of the tank. And there is no 2m gap between the LOX and RP tank, F9 uses common bulkhead tanks.

that's a wire, part of the landing leg assembly I assume

in the video, we hear some quite load noises. Perhaps some drilling bolts into concrete to secure the stage with?

Congratulations to the SpaceX team on the RTF, deploying the constellation of satellites, and landing the booster.

Note at the 22 minute mark of the webcast (youtube) ... 'the Falcon 9 engine now has a 33% increase in performance'.

As good a successful demonstration of "doubling down" as I've seen.
Colonel John Paul Stapp, MD. Formulated during those rocket sled experiments ... Stapp's Law: "The universal aptitude for ineptitude makes any human accomplishment an incredible miracle."

Fire hose.

Isn't the diameter of that hose too small to be a fire hose?

If you are talking about where the leg was before it was deployed, I think that is some cabling.

I suppose it could also be for RP-1 drain.
