Realspace Model's New Horizons
« on: 07/14/2015 04:09 pm »
Glenn at Realspace Models has come up with a very timely release.  A 1/24th scale resin model of the New Horizons spacecraft.  I received the kit on July 13, so I was able to start work on it as New Horizons made the final approach to Pluto.

The kit has a big chunk of resin for the main body.  The surface is detailed, even though it will be covered with foil.  A lot of foil.  I cut most of the pieces free, and painted those that I needed to paint first.  The inside of the dish is white, and the instruments had black apertures.  The foil takes a while to apply, and it is very thin and delicate.  I drilled a hole for a brass tube for support.  It will go into a small wooden plaque.

I added the vents, first cutting away a bit of foil so they can attach to the surface of the spacecraft.  I have also added the foil to the instruments.  I will add them after their foil dries.

I started the supports on the dish.  This is was a tedious and nerve racking assembly.  I had to simultaneously glue three V-shaped struts and get them to line up before the super glue set.

While this dries, I started adding the instruments to the spacecraft bus.  First was the Star Tracker and then then ALICE.

I next added SWAP to the side and inserted LORRI.  And PEPPSI was placed on the bus.  RALPH was added underneath ALICE.

The 8 thruster units were added as well.

While those set up, I added the RTG.

A few more touch ups left on the detail painting and the US Flag decals are left.  And I need to permantly attach the dish (AKA REX).  The silver rod will support it on the base.

Thanks, Hobbes.  Here is a couple of photos on the display base I made.  I also have a Pluto "Not yet explored" stamp to attach to the base, just like the one that was flown.  I still need to add the flag decals.

That dish does look very fiddly. I'm going to have to bite the bullet and get back into 'real' 3D modelling again!

Great work on this!

It isn't as bad as I thought, just don't rush it.

Anyway, here is a quick flyby photo.
