In @FCC filings, @Amazon's #ProjectKuiper and @OneWeb raise the curtain higher on their broadband satellite plans:

Given @amazon's interest in #mmWave/V-band phased array antennas and the lack of a corresponding @FCC filing could they be considering V band only for in-orbit use (ISLs) vs to the ground for #ProjectKuiper? @larrypress found an interesting paper recently:

“We’re super excited on where we are, what we have behind us,” OneWeb Chief Systems Engineer Carmel Ortiz said. “The system is performing better than expected."Ortiz had the opportunity to speak about OneWeb with @DougonIPComm. Read on in Space IT Bridge:

A video interview a couple of days ago with Adrian Steckel, CEO of OneWeb.  To summarize:

-Has submissions at the ITU for up to 6,000 satellites (when did they submit?);
-$1 million cost per satellite and headed lower (assume this means manufacturing costs);
-Manufacturing capacity of two per day;
-650 "Phase 1" satellites for a uniform constellation; and
-400 "Phase 2" satellites for hotspots.

That's still $6B for the satellites, not including launch! Satellite cost will probably need to go down quite a bit further.

Shotwell as attack dog, a new role for her, as far as I can recall...

Quote
SpaceX’s satellites will offer better capacity and be an order of magnitude cheaper than those from SoftBank Group Corp.-backed OneWeb, she said at an investment conference in New York.

“So if you’re thinking about investing in OneWeb, I would recommend strongly against it,” Shotwell said. “They fooled some people” who will be “pretty disappointed in the near term.”

Head-to-head competition between OneWeb and Starlink was inevitable. Remember the "warm welcome" OneWeb tried to give to Starlink? I'm referring to the lawsuit started by OneWeb to deny Starlink large parts of the spectrum as well as trying to ban Starlink from certain orbits.

It is only fair that SpaceX now strikes back. And really, it is just words. SpaceX could have decided to go down the lawsuit-road as well, but so far they haven't. Shotwell taking a few verbal stabs at OneWeb..? I would say she shot well (pun intended).

It is unclear to me how much OneWeb still has to raise and when it has to raise it.

Branson-backed OneWeb to raise $1bn for its satellite internet mega-constellation

With the recent WeWork shenanigans, Softbank's Vision Fund is going to need more winners. Placing their bets on OneWeb, against Starlink, makes some sense from a telecomms perspective...

Aspiring internet-via-satellite operator OneWeb says it is delaying launch of its next batch of 30-plus spacecraft from December to January to allow time for additional testing. Satellites due to ship from Florida to Baikonur next month. http://awin.aviationweek.com

Space is a beautiful natural resource. Let’s protect it for future generations.
OneWeb fits each of its satellites with a Grappling Fixture, a powerful design and engineering innovation developed by Altius for the OneWeb Responsible Space program. The Grappling Fixture enables new services for satellites in orbit and makes different types of capture techniques possible that can help keep Space clean.

They filed license applications for two different kinds of user terminals:
400,000 dual-parabolic SES-LIC-INTR2019-03436
1.5M electronically steered antenna SES-LIC-20190930-01217

Could these antennas be repurposed to access Starlink in case Oneweb goes belly up? Asking for a friend  ::) ;D

  Not likely. Antennas like ku GEO dishes tend to be fairly generic, with easily changeable features like swapping linear polarized for circular. But antennas made to track leo systems will probably be pretty specific to the system.
 You might be able to reuse the mounting screws.

OneWeb has apparently signed a cooperation framework agreement with the Sanya Municipal People's Government to set to up its first satellite ground stations in Asia in Sanya, on the Chinese island province of Hainan.

Every @OneWeb #satellite will have a magnetic grappling fixture that a rescue craft in orbit can find and grab.

Over half of the world's population is unconnected. We are building the world's first global communications network to try and solve this problem. Connecting everyone, everywhere is our mission.
