At the Baikonur Cosmodrome, preparations began for the launch of OneWeb spacecraft as part of missions No. 38 and No. 39. On Tuesday, February 1, 2022, a train with blocks and fairings of Soyuz-2.1b launch vehicles arrived at Tyuratam station.

Specialists of the Yuzhny Space Center (a branch of the Center for the Operation of Ground-Based Space Infrastructure Objects, part of the Roscosmos State Corporation) met the train, after which it was transported to site No. 112 of the cosmodrome. All work performed by specialists is carried out in accordance with pre-launch schedules.

Recall that in 2021, three launch campaigns were carried out at the Baikonur Cosmodrome under the OneWeb program. In 2022, the first launch of OneWeb spacecraft using the Soyuz-2.1b launch vehicle with the Fregat upper stage is scheduled for March 5 (mission No. 38).

In connection with the upcoming launch, the preparation of the Fregat upper stage continues at the cosmodrome. Currently, work is underway with the ground control system complex and electrical tests.

OneWeb spacecraft are designed to create a space communication system that provides high-speed Internet access anywhere in the world.

MOSCOW, February 7. /TASS/. A Soyuz-ST-B carrier rocket was delivered to the launch pad of the Kourou spaceport in French Guiana to orbit the next batch of British OneWeb communications satellites, Russia’s State Space Corporation Roscosmos announced on Friday.

"A Soyuz-ST-B rocket, which is to launch the next batch of 34 OneWeb spacecraft into orbit, was taken to the launch pad at the Guiana Space Center (French Guiana). On Monday, February 7, 2022, the first launch day schedule works began," Roscosmos said on its website.

The pre-launch preparations at the Guiana Space Center include separate transportation of the rocket (an assembly of three stages) and the spacehead unit and their subsequent assembly on a launcher, using a mobile service tower, it said.

"The launch of a Soyuz-ST-B carrier rocket is scheduled for February 10, 2022, at 21:09:37 Moscow time," Roscosmos specified.

CEO of the commercial launch operator Glavkosmos (part of Roscosmos) Dmitry Loskutov earlier told TASS that seven launches of British OneWeb communications satellites were scheduled for 2022. The first launch was scheduled to take place from the Guiana space center (the Kourou cosmodrome) in February, he specified.

British OneWeb low-orbit satellites are designed to create a space-based communications system to provide high-speed Internet access in any locality worldwide. Currently, the OneWeb orbital cluster comprises 394 satellites. All of them were orbited by Russian Soyuz carrier rockets.

On Monday, February 7, 2022, the rocket was installed in the launch facility, the space warhead (upper stage with spacecraft under the fairing flaps) was installed on it. The preparation of the Soyuz-ST-B launch vehicle at the launch complex is carried out under a mobile service tower, which serves to protect the product and personnel from precipitation in the difficult weather conditions of the equatorial climate of French Guiana.

The Guiana Space Center (French Guiana) is hosting another pre-launch day of preparations for the launch of the Soyuz-ST-B launch vehicle with the Fregat-M upper stage and 34 OneWeb spacecraft. Their launch is scheduled for February 10, 2022 at 21:09:37 Moscow time.

Specialists of the Center for the Operation of Ground-Based Space Infrastructure Facilities (part of the Roscosmos State Corporation) are preparing refueling equipment for refueling the launch vehicle with propellant components. The crew of the Scientific and Production Association named after S. A. Lavochkin (part of Roscosmos) is testing the Fregat-M upper stage.

On Wednesday, February 9, 2022, under the chairmanship of Arianespace, in the presence of the customer of the spacecraft, a readiness review for the upcoming launch will be held. It is expected that this meeting will give permission to proceed with the start-up day schedule.

OneWeb satellites can take on EU’s Galileo GPS, says Kwarteng

A Soyuz rocket is poised to continue the deployment of the OneWeb constellation with the first mission in 2022 scheduled to lift off on February 10 at 21:09 Moscow Time (1:09 p.m. EST). Launching from the near-equatorial launch site in French Guiana, it will be the 13th OneWeb mission, boosting the overall number of spacecraft in the network from 394 to 428.

Preparations for launch

The 13th OneWeb mission had the designation VS27 according to Paris-based Arianespace venture, which manages Soyuz launches from the Guiana space center in South America.

The launch was previously planned for January 6, but it was delayed until February 10, 2022.

A transport plane with OneWeb satellites for the mission landed at the airport in Cayenne, French Guiana, on Jan. 14, 2022.

The active launch campaign for the mission started in French Guiana with the fueling of the Fregat upper stage on January 15 by a team of specialists from TsENKI ground infrastructure division at Roskosmos. On January 20, another group of engineers from RKTs Progress, which builds the Soyuz rocket family, was due at the center to start processing of the Soyuz ST-B vehicle.

The fueled Fregat was transferred from the FCube building to the S3B-NH assembly facility on February 1 and, the next day, the space tug was integrated with 34 satellites previously attached to a common payload dispenser. The assembly of the rocket's upper composite, including the Fregat, satellites and the payload fairing, was completed on February 4.

The rollout of the three-stage booster cluster to the launch pad took place on February 7, followed by the delivery and integration of the payload section with the rocket on the same day inside the movable service tower positioned on the pad. The integrated tests and dress rehearsals were conducted on February 8 and 9, clearing the vehicle for launch the next day.

Launch profile of the 13 OneWeb mission

A Soyuz-2 (ST-B) rocket carrying a cluster of 34 OneWeb satellites is scheduled to lift off from the ELS complex in Kourou, French Guiana, on Feb. 10, 2022, at 15:09: 37 local time in French Guiana (1:09 p.m. EST, 21:09 Moscow Time).

After eight seconds of vertical ascent from the sea-side pad, the launch vehicle will begin tilting northward, heading over the Atlantic Ocean to align its ascent trajectory with a near-polar orbit inclined 87.77 degrees toward the plane of the Equator.

The four boosters of the first stage will separate 1 minute 58 seconds into the flight, followed by the payload fairing splitting into two halves and dropping off 3 minutes and 37 seconds after the liftoff. The second (core) stage will separate 4 minutes and 48 seconds in flight, moments after the third stage ignites its RD-0124 engine. The latter will operate until 9 minutes and 24 seconds in flight, completing its burn just short of orbital velocity, which will ensure the booster's immediate reentry over the Atlantic and a splashdown between Canada and Greenland.

In the meantime, the Fregat upper stage will fire its engine for around four minutes, starting 10 minutes and 24 seconds after launch. The maneuver will form the initial transfer orbit, which the stack will climb passively for around 43 minutes.

During the ascent of the Soyuz rocket and the most critical maneuvers of the Fregat upper stage, the mission will be crossing the communications range of various ground stations from Guiana to Bermuda Islands to the Arctic Ocean, downlinking data about its status.

Upon reaching the apogee (highest point) of the transfer trajectory, 54 minutes and 15 seconds after launch, Fregat will re-ignite its engine for around two minutes to make its orbit circular at an altitude of around 1,000 kilometers.

The first pair of OneWeb satellites will be released in opposite directions from their dispenser exactly one hour after launch.

In the following 15 minutes after the release of the first pair of satellites, Fregat should make a 15-second burn with its small attitude control thrusters to get in position for another release around three minutes later, this time of four satellites at the 1-hour 19-minute mark in the flight.

The Fregat is then programmed to repeat its thruster firing and release routine seven more times, evenly distributing the quartets of satellites along their orbit, according to the following timeline:

Separation 3 – L+1 hour 38 minutes;
Separation 4 – L+1 hour 57 minutes;
Separation 5 – L+2 hours 17 minutes;
Separation 6 – L+2 hours 36 minutes;
Separation 7 – L+2 hours 55 minutes;
Separation 8 – L+3 hours 14 minutes;
Separation 9 – L+3 hours 33 minutes.

The empty Fregat is then programmed to initiate a braking maneuver with its main engine which is designed to push the stage on a disposal orbit, resulting in its quick destruction in the upper atmosphere 5 hours and 39 minutes after launch.
