Launch vehicle Soyuz-2.1b was assembled at Baikonur

At the Baikonur cosmodrome, the assembly of the space warhead consisting of OneWeb vehicles, the Fregat upper stage and the nose fairing has been completed. The docking operations took place in the assembly and test building of site No. 112 of the Baikonur cosmodrome and lasted five days.

Specialists from the Yuzhny Space Center (a branch of the Center for Operation of Ground-Based Space Infrastructure Facilities), the S.А. Lavochkin and the Progress Rocket and Space Center (part of the State Corporation Roscosmos).

In the process of assembly, the front fairing flaps were installed on a bundle of 34 spacecraft with the Fregat upper stage, after which the telemetry sensors and pyrotechnics of the fairing were checked. The next stage of preparation for launch is the transportation of the warhead to the technical complex of site No. 31 for general assembly with the Soyuz-2.1b launch vehicle.

The launch of 34 OneWeb spacecraft is scheduled for August 20, 2021 from the Vostok launch complex of site 31 of the Baikonur cosmodrome.

Vostochny specialists started work with the Fregat upper stage

At the Vostochny cosmodrome, specialists from the joint crew of the Vostochny Space Center (a branch of the Center for Operation of Ground-Based Space Infrastructure Facilities) and the S.А. Lavochkin (part of the State Corporation "Roscosmos") at the Technical Complex began work with the upper stage "Fregat".

In accordance with the comprehensive schedule of technological work within the 49th mission of the OneWeb launch campaign, the cosmodrome employees removed the Fregat upper stage from storage. After unloading, it was installed at the workplace.

Along with this, the engineers of the Vostochny Space Center started preparing ground-based technological equipment for electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic vacuum tests.

London, 12 August 2021: Hanwha, the South Korean Fortune 500, global technology and manufacturing company has announced a USD $300m equity investment by Hanwha Systems (“Hanwha”) in OneWeb, the Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite communications company. Hanwha brings further defence capabilities and the latest antenna technologies to OneWeb, alongside relationships to new government customers and expanded geographical reach.

This investment brings OneWeb’s total equity investment since November 2020 to USD $2.7bn with no debt issuance. The investment is expected to be completed in the first half of 2022, subject to regulatory approvals.

OneWeb’s first generation fleet of 648 satellites that will deliver global coverage in 2022 is fully funded. To date, the company has launched 254 satellites into orbit, with another launch planned this August from Baikonur, Kazakhstan. Thanks to the success of recent launches, OneWeb’s network will be ready to offer connectivity services from 50th parallel and above by the end of 2021.

In the assembly and test building of the Baikonur cosmodrome, on August 13, 2021, specialists from subsidiaries of the State Corporation Roscosmos - the Yuzhny Space Center (a branch of the Center for Operation of Ground-Based Space Infrastructure Facilities) and a branch of the Progress Rocket and Space Center - completed the general assembly of the Soyuz space rocket -2.1b / Frigate / OneWeb as part of mission 35.

In accordance with the work schedule, on August 12, the space warhead (the Fregat upper stage and the OneWeb vehicles under the fairing flaps) were docked with the third stage of the Soyuz-2.1b rocket. The next day, this assembly was docked to the "package" of the first two stages of the carrier. Upon completion of this operation, the electrical connections were assembled and the pipelines for temperature control were installed.

At present, the space rocket is installed on the transport and installation unit before being transported to the launch complex of the site No. 31. There are no comments on the preparation of the component parts. A meeting of the State Commission is planned for tomorrow, August 14, on the readiness to transport the rocket to the launch site.

The launch of the Soyuz-2.1b carrier rocket with the Fregat upper stage and a batch of 34 new OneWeb spacecraft is scheduled for August 20, 2021 at 01:23 Moscow time. The launch will take place as part of the contracts between Glavkosmos (a subsidiary of Roscosmos) and the European launch services provider Arianespace (operator of OneWeb spacecraft launches using the Soyuz-2 launch vehicle) and Starsem.

OneWeb satellites are designed to create a space communications system that provides high-speed Internet access anywhere in the world. The orbital constellation will consist of 18 planes with 36 vehicles each.

A meeting of the State Commission is planned tomorrow to clear the rocket for rollout to the launch pad.

At the Baikonur cosmodrome, a meeting of the State Commission for Flight Testing of Spacecraft Launching Facilities was held on readiness to transport the Soyuz-2.1b carrier rocket to the launch complex under the OneWeb program (mission No. 35). On the eve of the assembly and testing building, the general assembly of the Soyuz-2.1b / Fregat / OneWeb space rocket took place.

Based on the results of the reports, the members of the State Commission decided to remove the space rocket and install it at the launch site of the Vostok site No. 31 on August 16, 2021. The start of work on transportation is scheduled at 05:30 Moscow time, after which the specialists of the State Corporation Roscosmos will begin work according to the schedule of the first launch day. At present, active preparations are underway there to receive a space rocket.
