The tenth launch from the Vostochny cosmodrome took place
07/01/2021 15:57
Today, July 1, 2021, at 15:48:33 Moscow time, the launch crews of the subsidiaries of the State Corporation Roscosmos at the Vostochny cosmodrome launched the Soyuz-2.1b carrier rocket with the Fregat upper stage and 36 new spacecraft of the company OneWeb as part of mission 48. At 15:57 Moscow time, the upper stage separated from the third stage of the carrier on a suborbital trajectory.
According to telemetry information, the launch, separation of the stages and the orbital block were carried out in the normal mode. After that, the Fregat upper stage continued to launch 36 vehicles into the target circular orbit. Over the next 3 hours and 40 minutes, OneWeb satellites, in accordance with the flight sequence, will be separated (in groups of four satellites) from the Russian "accelerator" produced by the S.A. Lavochkin (part of the Roscosmos State Corporation). The spacecraft are launched into an orbit with an altitude of 450 km, after which they are independently launched into 12 preset planes.
With this launch, the OneWeb LEO constellation will increase by another 36 satellites and reach 254 satellites. Thus, the orbital constellation will be 100% manned to cover all regions north of latitude 50. This launch will open up full-fledged access to services in the UK, Alaska, Northern Europe, Greenland, Iceland, the continental United States, the seas of the Arctic Ocean and Canada.
Today's launch was the fifth commercial launch from the Vostochny cosmodrome implemented under contracts between Glavkosmos (part of Roscosmos) with the European launch services provider Arianespace (operator of OneWeb spacecraft launches using the Soyuz-2 launch vehicle) and Starsem for the satellite operator. group OneWeb from the Russian cosmodrome.
The Soyuz-2 launch vehicle was developed on the basis of the Soyuz-U serial rocket. The lead developer is the Progress Rocket and Space Center (Samara, part of Roscosmos). Upgraded propulsion systems and modern control and measurement systems are used on launch vehicles of the Soyuz-2 family, which improves technical and operational characteristics. Structurally "Soyuz-2", like all missiles of the "Soyuz" family, is made according to the scheme of longitudinal-transverse division of rocket stages. In combination with the Fregat upper stage, it is intended for launching spacecraft into low-earth orbits of various heights and inclinations, including geo-transfer and geostationary orbits, as well as departure trajectories.
Liquid-propellant rocket engines RD-107A and RD-108A are used at the first and second stages of the launch vehicle, and at the third stage, the four-chamber RD-0124. With the help of RD-107 and RD-108 developments of the Scientific and Production Association "Energomash" named after academician V.P. Glushko (Khimki, part of Roskosmos) reliably ensures the implementation of the domestic program of manned flights and spacecraft launch. To date, work has been carried out to modernize the basic RD-107 engines for the first stage and RD-108 engines for the second stage - 18 modifications for various programs.

A batch of 36 OneWeb satellites in orbit
07/01/2021 20:26
On Thursday, July 1, 2021, at 15:48:33 Moscow time, the tenth launch took place from the Vostochny cosmodrome and the fourth this year. The Soyuz launch complex successfully launched the Soyuz-2.1b launch vehicle with the Fregat upper stage and 36 spacecraft from the OneWeb satellite company. After 563.7 seconds, the warhead detached itself from the third stage of the carrier and continued its autonomous flight.
The sequential separation of nine groups of spacecraft from the upper stage took place in accordance with the plan laid down by the specialists of the S.A. Lavochkin flight cyclogram. During the launch, eleven active sites were provided: three activations of the main propulsion system (the last one for the purpose of delivering the upper stage to the “withdrawal orbit”) and eight activations of the propulsion system for stabilization, orientation and launch support necessary for safe separation and divergence of satellites.
They are in the normal mode injected into target orbits. Foreign customers of Glavkosmos confirmed the full fulfillment of the contractual obligations by the company. All satellites are accepted for communication by the customer. After the completion of the disengagement and separation of spacecraft, the Fregat upper stage will be de-orbited, and non-combustible elements will be flooded into the uninhabited part of the Pacific Ocean.
The Upper Stage "Fregat" ensures the efficient performance of all tasks of placing one or several vehicles into working orbits or trajectories taking off from the Earth. The entire process of launching is carried out autonomously, without interference from the Earth. The highest reliability and almost perfect launch accuracy provide the upper stage with undeniable competitive advantages in the global space launch market. This launch was the 98th for the Fregat upper stage.
The spacecraft were launched by order of the European provider of launch services Arianespace (operator of the launch of OneWeb spacecraft using the Soyuz-2 launch vehicle) and by Starsem under the contracts of Glavkosmos (a subsidiary of the State Corporation Roscosmos). It also became the fifth fully commercial launch from the Vostochny cosmodrome and was carried out by the joint crew of Roscosmos enterprises: RCC Progress, NPO Lavochkin, TsENKI, RKS, Glavkosmos, as well as foreign customers.
OneWeb satellites are designed to create a space communications system that provides high-speed Internet access anywhere in the world. The orbital constellation will consist of 18 planes with 36 vehicles each. After the launch, the constellation of OneWeb satellites in low Earth orbit numbers 254 satellites, and hundreds of others are planned to be launched.
Today's launch made it possible to open full-fledged access to services in the UK, Alaska, Northern Europe, Greenland, Iceland, the continental United States, in the seas of the Arctic Ocean and Canada. Demonstration access to the services will be launched this summer in several key regions, including Alaska and Canada - OneWeb is now preparing to fully launch commercial services in these regions in the next six months. Offering connectivity services that meet industry standards, the company has already announced a number of distribution partnerships across multiple industries, including ROCK Networks, AST Group, PDI, Alaska Communications, and more - and continues to grow its global capabilities. OneWeb also continues to interact with telecommunications and Internet providers, authorities, as well as other market players around the world in order to offer high-speed access services. At the same time, the company sees a growing demand for new services to connect the most remote points of the globe.
Commercial access is expected to be open before the end of the year, with global access slated to open in 2022. In honor of the fifth launch of "Five to 50" and the delivery of all satellites on time, a welcome message "Hello North Pole" was posted on the head fairing, which symbolized OneWeb's significant progress in covering the Arctic.
Internet access via the OneWeb satellite system will be provided through 40 ground-based terminal stations that will be deployed on the surface of the Earth. The OneWeb terminals will be self-contained, self-sufficient and well protected from adverse environmental factors. Each of the terminals will be able to provide high-speed Internet access in its coverage area via Wi-Fi, LTE or 5G technologies.
