Vostochny is preparing for the July launch

05/25/2021 18:10

At Vostochny, intensive preparations are underway for the July launch. Thus, specialists from subsidiaries of the State Corporation Roscosmos - the Vostochny Space Center (a branch of the Center for Operation of Ground-Based Space Infrastructure Facilities) and the S.А. Lavochkin - at the cosmodrome, the Fregat upper stage was transported from the assembly and test building of the launch vehicle to the refueling and neutralization station.

These works are carried out as part of the launch of the fifth batch of 36 OneWeb spacecraft from the Vostochny cosmodrome, scheduled for July 2021. In the near future, Roskosmos specialists will start filling the upper stage with propellant components and compressed gases. In accordance with the schedule, the Fregat refueling works will take place until June 18, 2021.

The launch will take place as part of the contracts between Glavkosmos (a subsidiary of Roscosmos State Corporation) with the European launch services provider Arianespace (operator of OneWeb spacecraft launches using the Soyuz-2 launch vehicle) and Starsem and will become the fifth fully commercial Vostochny cosmodrome.

On the East, the third starting day

05/26/2021 09:15

At the Russian Vostochny cosmodrome, active preparations continue for the launch of the Soyuz-2.1b carrier rocket with the Fregat upper stage and 36 OneWeb spacecraft. On Wednesday, May 26, 2021, specialists from subsidiaries of the State Corporation Roscosmos began to perform operations on the third launch day.

Yesterday, work was carried out according to the schedule of the second launch day, which ended with general tests - checking the functioning of the systems of the launch complex with an imitation of the separation of the launch vehicle, its flight to the separation of the orbital block on a suborbital trajectory. The main content of the work today is the pouring of the filling system with highly concentrated hydrogen peroxide and the cooling of the fuel.

At 03:00 Moscow time (09:00 local time), the initial state and battery charge of 36 OneWeb spacecraft were monitored. At 16:15 Moscow time, the filling of the refueling system with highly concentrated hydrogen peroxide will begin, then - the attachment of the refueling hoses to the space rocket and the final operations.

On Thursday evening, a meeting of the State Commission will take place, following which decisions will be made on refueling the Soyuz-2.1b carrier rocket with propellants and its further launch. The launch of the Soyuz-2.1b carrier rocket with the Fregat upper stage and a batch of 36 spacecraft from the British company OneWeb is scheduled for May 27, 2021 at 20:43 Moscow time. This will be the fourth fully commercial launch from Vostochny, carried out under contracts between Glavkosmos (part of Roscosmos) with the European launch services provider Arianespace (operator of OneWeb spacecraft launches using the Soyuz launch vehicle) and Starsem for OneWeb from this cosmodrome ...

ONEWEB SECURES $550 MILLION IN NEW FUNDING: EUTELSAT TO TAKE SIGNIFICANT EQUITY STAKE IN THE COMPANY

This may impact Eutelsat's role in designing and building a proposed EU satellite internet constellation, as SpaceNews reports:
Quote from: Thierry Breton, EU commissioner
I do not see how, structurally and in governance, an entity can have stakes in two competing projects[...] we took a good note of the decision of Eutelsat to invest into a project in direct competition with the European initiative that we’re working on.
It seems possible that they might be forced to divest from one project or the other, which might have an impact on OneWeb.

Eutelsat argued that the projects are "not in conflict with each other", as the EU project would be focused on Europe, while OneWeb has a global presence.

I'm not certain if anyone has yet pointed out to them that global operations encompass Europe.
All aboard the HSF hype train!  Choo Choo!

Is there gonna be any OneWeb launches on any non-R7-based rockets? If so, when?
Chris  Whoever loves correction loves knowledge, but he who hates reproof is stupid.

According to this article https://www.nasaspaceflight.com/2021/05/seventh-batch-of-oneweb-satellites-ready-to-launch-from-vostochny/, the OneWeb satellites mass is 147kg. This compares to Starlink satellites said to mass pretty close to twice as much.

What does this say about the construction, functionality and longevity of the two types of satellite?

The failed control system unit was replaced in the Soyuz-2 rocket.

09:41 28.05.2021 (updated: 09:54 28.05.2021)

MOSCOW, May 28 - RIA Novosti. Specialists at the Vostochny cosmodrome replaced a faulty unit in the control system of the Soyuz-2.1b launch vehicle at the Vostochny cosmodrome before the launch of 36 British communications satellites OneWeb , a source in the rocket and space industry told RIA Novosti.

The start was planned on Thursday, but Roscosmos postponed it for a day for technical reasons. Later, the company Arianespace announced that the rocket will replace the electrical equipment.

"The inertial measuring unit in the control system of the Soyuz-2.1b missile, which refused yesterday during the prelaunch check, has been replaced," the agency's source said.

He noted that this situation is similar to what happened in April 2016 before the launch of the Soyuz-STA rocket with the European satellite Sentinel-1B from the Kourou cosmodrome in French Guiana.

"Then the replacement of the inertial measuring unit on the rocket was also required," the source explained.

According to Roskosmos, the launch of Soyuz-2.1b is scheduled for today at 20.38 Moscow time. It will be the eighth for Russian space rockets in 2021.
