Work on the Soyuz-2.1b rocket started at Vostochny

05/06/2021 09:45

A joint crew of specialists from the Vostochny Space Center (a branch of the Center for Operation of Ground-Based Space Infrastructure Facilities) and the Progress Rocket and Space Center (part of the Roscosmos State Corporation) carried out operations to transfer the “package” ( first and second stages) of the Soyuz-2.1b launch vehicle to the workplace in preparation for testing.

In the near future, the calculation will begin pneumatic and electrical testing of the product. On the same day, the specialists of the Vostochny Space Center ensured the transportation of the nose fairing flaps from the launch vehicle assembly and test case to the spacecraft case for further assembly.

Upper stage "Fregat" for this mission is at the refueling station at the refueling and neutralization station. Refueling works in accordance with the schedule will take place until May 13, 2021. All work is carried out in preparation for the launch of the fourth batch of 36 OneWeb spacecraft from the Vostochny cosmodrome, which is scheduled for May 2021.

As I happen to have some knowledge of Russian language, I thought to comment on this "calculation" thing (bolded by me) you often see in those apparently auto-translated news articles and might be wondering what it is. Actually they mean "staff" or "crew" - one of the ways Russians say it (usually with regard to military or related), indeed is the same word as "calculation" so no wonder the translator mixes it up.

That makes much more sense. Thanks

The fourth batch of OneWeb devices arrived at Vostochny

05/07/2021 07:45

36 OneWeb spacecraft arrived at the Ignatievo airport (Blagoveshchensk) on an An-124-100 aircraft. Specialists of the Vostochny Space Center (a branch of the Center for Operation of Ground-Based Space Infrastructure Facilities, part of the Roscosmos State Corporation) delivered the space cargo to the cosmodrome.

Today, May 7, 2021, they began preparations for the launch planned for May using Russian launch vehicles: the Soyuz-2.1b launch vehicle (manufactured by the Progress Rocket and Space Center) with the Fregat upper stage (manufactured by Nauchno- production association named after S.A. Lavochkin).

Today, the constellation of OneWeb satellites in low Earth orbit numbers 182 spacecraft, with hundreds of others planned to be launched. The upcoming launch should bring the number of OneWeb spacecraft in orbit to 218. OneWeb LEO satellites are designed to provide terrestrial consumers with high-speed Internet directly via satellite communications.

Two launch vehicles were sent to the Vostochny cosmodrome

05/07/2021 08:24

On the night of May 6-7, 2021, a train with blocks of two Soyuz-2 launch vehicles was sent to the Vostochny cosmodrome in the Amur Region from the Progress Rocket and Space Center (Samara, part of the Roscosmos State Corporation) »Stage 1b. These rockets are designed to launch several batches of British spacecraft from the satellite company OneWeb.

The Soyuz-2.1b launch vehicle was created at the Progress RCC and is a modification of the Soyuz-2. Compared to version 1a, it has an engine with increased energy characteristics in the third stage. The Soyuz-2.1b has higher launch accuracy, stability and controllability than the previous version, and an increased payload mass.

Liquid-propellant rocket engines RD-107A and RD-108A are used at the first and second stages of the launch vehicle, and at the third stage, the four-chamber RD-0124. With the help of RD-107 and RD-108 developments of the Scientific and Production Association "Energomash" named after academician V.P. Glushko (part of Roskosmos) reliably ensures the implementation of the domestic program of manned flights and spacecraft launch. To date, work has been carried out to modernize the basic RD-107 engines for the first stage and RD-108 engines for the second stage - 18 modifications for various programs.
