Could only mean SpaceX is going for Network morning shows viewership.
Agreed and the company is showing its media savvy too. A nice, unequivocally-successful test will be a big technology talking point throughout the day's news cycle (barring some major disaster stealing the headlines) and will doubtless provoke political comment.
At the risk of thread derailment, a successful test next Wednesday and the test flight of what I believe is the upper stage of BO's Shepard will have those on the appropriate Congressional committees looking at certain people and asking to remind them why they're being paid.

And if not, if SpaceX wanted to make some cash off this mission, they could strap life-sized Kerbals into the seats instead, and Squad could pay them for an awesome advertising opportunity for KSP's "launch"!

Ballistic coefficient is lower for the trunk. Additionally, there could be a small separation boost by the (regular) Dracos at separation.

Why wouldn't the trunk turn and enter they way NovaSilisko drew it? Seems as though that would be the stable orientation.
I don't know which way the interstage will actually fall, but aft end first is possible.
The actual geometry of the fins is much different than how NovaSilisko drew them. The actual fin geometry has much less surface area, meaning much less effect on the overall center of pressure. So the fins may lower the center of gravity more than they lower the center of pressure. The center of pressure then stays forward of the center of gravity, causing the interstage to fall aft end first.
Also possible that the interstage center of gravity (even without fins) is slightly aft of midpoint.

Not that it matters much (and we shall hopefully see shortly), but the trunk has the support beams just under the heat shield of the Dragon. That might be just enough weight to shuttlecock the trunk as it falls. Next OCD issue: will the airstream blow out the Kevlar/insulation layer at the front of the trunk?

Nice reference. I had a look back at the
schedule thread and at the time Orion's first flight was sketched in for December 2013 on Ares I. So if history repeats Dragon 2 could soon find its rocket getting cancelled from underneath it and replaced with a BFR due in about 2023.
A pretty big if though.

The idea of parachutes on the trunk would make sense if we're also trying to salvage whatever cargo is stored there on an ill-fated flight.
That brings up another question: What's the maximum trunk payload that can be stored while still allowing a full abort distance with up to seven crew and some cargo?

No -- see, that's the guy who has the job of lighting the fuses. To change the paradigm of launch system costs, SpaceX saves a
ton of money by removing the electronic ignition command systems -- hence, they always have guys under their rockets, lighting the fuses and then running like hell.
I hear there's a pretty high turnover rate...

This test has been such a long time coming that it's hard to believe that it's tomorrow.
Obviously we al hope for success. But so many things to test in one test, all the SDs, avionics and controls, software, drogue and main chutes, new trunk.
Maybe there is commonality to Dragin 1 on the these systems but it's still a bold big step. If it all works it shows they have a lot ready.

I believe their plan to avoid the lightning protection wires is simply to not reinstall the wires they took down for the pad abort test until after the pad abort test, but that's just speculation on my part.

That was amazing! It is rare that anything (rockets, games, cars, etc.) looks anything like the initial CG renderings, but that looked uncannily similar to their DV2 announcement video. Absolutely brilliant. Great job SpaceX!

(Technically, they said "max drag", but since it's close enough for a party and max drag doesn't have the same ring to it, I'll stick with the "Woo-hoo! at MaxQ". Also, Falcon 9/3 just seems like a perfect way to designate a three-engined test vehicle, since it works either way: a Falcon 9 with three engines or a Falcon with nine-thirds engines.)

I read that the 4th quarter of this year is the penciled in timeframe for that test.

I mean, after that, why is it that two years go by before they fly crew? It seems like they would be closer to a crewed flight than that no? Is this where spacex can pad the bill a bit over the next two years and collect on paper milestones?

Hardly. The real hard work of flight certification still remains.
It's not like its a car, after its tested you jump in and drive it off the lot.

Let me understand...This test happened so that we could prove in one demonstration that astronauts can safely escape a launch pad and while saving taxpayer money by not having to pay for flights to the ISS via Soyuz.
Kinda the wrong thread to have a serious discussion.. so here's a story.
Neil is adrift.. in fact, he's a drifter. One day, after thanking the driver for taking him as far as the next town he decides it might be time to give up hitchhiking. Thing is, Neil can't really afford a new car. Suddenly, he's overwhelmed with painful memories of his old life - he had a car then, in fact he had four! Two of them were involved in preventable accidents, he lost some good friends and just couldn't stand to drive any more. Still, he reasons, this time it would be different. He'd buy one of those really safe cars - even safer than the old clunkers he's seen so much on the roads... so many years, so many rides. Maybe he'll get one of those new electric cars from that guy - what's his name? Doesn't matter - the point is, it'll be safe. Secure. He can stop drifting.

I'm still trying to figure out (since I'm a blonde) why the astronauts really need a spaceship to get to the beach from KSC.
1. According to your user name, you're actually a blond (no e).
2. "Need" is really too strong of a word. They don't need a spaceship to get to the beach. But if you happen to have one sitting around, why not use it?
