I really feel it was one okay name and two bad names to sway the vote to the one preferred name. I'll go put my Al-Li hat back on while I wait for the obvious avian outcome.
Why couldn't they have chose something from American lore that stood for something, like John Henry.

Done. Uninspired names worthy of ridicule.
If you are laughing at "Eagle", do you also find "Falcon" funny? They're both raptors.

In popular lore it is a spacecraft from the Gerry Anderson's "Space: 1999: TV series.

Eagle:
-It's emblazoned in my mind as "The Eagle has landed"...
-Even though "Falcon" is taken from a Star Wars reference and not the bird, selecting Eagle, feels like a "me-2" name.
Freedom:
-Having to hear..."And, we have liftoff of Freedom...etc" will sound....not right.
-Feels very...cheesy.
Galaxy:
-Cell-phones, enough said. (hat tip to helodriver for the reminder.)
They'd have been better off allowing the public to come up with their own names and then let employees pick from that as opposed to the other way around.
So as of now, I abstain...

Those are .... not great ... names. Eagle is IMO the least bad.
How is Eagle any much worse than Falcon.

Did I say it was? It is not a bad name per se (and clearly one they are hoping for by stacking such terrible names against it), but it isn't very original or inspiring in its same-y-ness.

Eagle is the least bad name on that list. I'm a fan of mythological names for rockets, they conjure thoughts of grand heroes, heritage, and timelessness. Eagle can work because of its association with Apollo 11, but realistically its on that list not for that but because its a twofer; a dig at the Falcon name (ours is bigger!) and like the name Freedom, its flag waving, chest thumping, mom n' apple pie, with us or against us patriotism aimed at politicians. (as was ATK's Liberty launch vehicle)
GalaxyOne is a great name for a cellphone. Or an internet upstart run by teenagers, but that's really a name come up by marketing professionals trying too hard to market to teenagers and be kewl.
As for Falcon, its grown on me, and even though Elon tells the story how it was named for the Millennium Falcon, we all know the name was picked in hopes of winning future business for their first light launcher (Falcon 1) as an entrant in DARPA's
Force
Application and
Launch from
CONtinental United States program which funded its development.

OK we need to dial up the seriousness a bit. While I happily mocked ULA on my FB page for this, let's not be that guy (or gal) here. WE treat companies respectfully HERE because here, on the finest space related site in the known universe, we are all adults.
How about we self moderate some of the more egregious stuff?
Thanks.

Falcon is named for Han Solo's Millennium Falcon, not the bird.

I'm not sure it's mockery--I for one am a big fan of what ULA is doing, and am really interested in seeing what NGLV ends up looking like. I just think almost everyone was disappointed by the name options. If you want to split that out into a separate thread, that's fine. But this is one where even ULA's fans were underwhelmed, not just people who actively dislike ULA.

Because it comes after Falcon. Are we really going to have the SpaceX Falcon and the ULA Eagle? What's next, the Orbital ATK Hawk?

To me, neither Eagle nor Falcon have the punch like names such as Titan, Thor, Proton, Atlas, Delta, etc. have. I'm very underwhelmed by this choice, but if I had to pick one I'd go with Eagle. The other two suggestions are just... ugh...

But how can this be?
these were among the most frequently suggested
Or maybe they were right up there in the top three thousand?

I can see the newspaper headline now, if an Eagle launch doesn't go to plan. "The Eagle Has Landed".

I don't know who is advising the leaders of ULA but Tory on Twitter and this, awfully executed "name our rocket" public outreach, just isn't cutting it. Expert rocket designers and engineers they may be, marketing mavens?....Not so much.
I'll make ULA a deal: I won't launch rockets and they won't try their hands at consumer marketing. If anyone from ULA wants to know how this should be done, ping me.

I don't know where he's getting that from. A bunch of employees are going to independently suggest 'GalaxyOne'? Literally everyone I've talked to (across multiple departments) hates the choices.

Perhaps they can get some special dispensation to put Atlas back on the list? I like Atlas VI about a zillion times better than the current choices, and I suspect I'm not alone.
