I received an email from NK this morning, which had an invoice attached for a subscription for 2015 in PDF format. Upon opening the PDF, my system locked up. After a reboot, I discovered that my computer was infected with a virus that Microsoft does not seem to be able to handle - after Windows starts the screen goes black.

I am not sure if all emails from NK are similarly infected, or why I received the email, but be careful opening emails with attachments from NK.

I am attempting to use a system restore on my Windows 7 machine in hopes that I can get my system running off a backup (I backup religiously), but am not sure if that will work.

I recommend changing this setting in Acrobat Reader, to make opening documents safe:

Edit -> Preferences -> JavaScript -> Uncheck Enable Adobe Javascript -> OK.

I assumed that I received the email because I subscribed to the NK Forum, did anyone receive the email who didn't subscribe to the NK Forum?

I would recommend uninstalling all Adobe software and installing Chrome.
If you associate .pdf with Chrome then you can use it to read your docs.
Flash is built into Chrome so you don't need a separate Adobe Flash player install.

Benefits:
No more Adobe nagging from its updaters.
Better security - Chrome auto updates when new vulns are discovered.

YMMV but works great for me...
