NG's CEV in AW

"Aviation Week" Magazine, July 31 edition, page 16: Northrop-Grumman is running a full-page ad of a mockup of their Crew Exploration Vehicle design, which I believe is a first. I'm without scanner so can't post the image, and don't know about copyrights, et al. Perhaps another member of the forum who's more learned can find a way to get this online without ruffling feathers. I did a double-take when I saw it. Its propped on its side, with photo taken from front-quarter position. I would guess it's the 5.5m version, and it looks BIG.

This is the last release that I have seen from NG unless someone here has something newer or closer to what rsp1202 speaks of.

Now, lockheed's SM is clearly differant then what DAC-2 specified. If Lockheed wins, will they be allowed to build the SM how they want?

Why use two engines, when RCS can be used as a backup?

I would say they are just way behind the DAC-2 changes. The images would take a long time to draw up and DAC-2 was only a week ago.

I think that's supposed to be motion blur...

This is new, a "live" shot with techs standing around it as it sits on a test jig. It's hard to tell, but one of their computer monitors looks like it's showing a view of CEV's interior with control panel, etc.
Here's the ad/mock-up.

Looks a lot bigger there then it does in those DAC-2 Drawings.

I held a ruler up to the screen, and the guy with the silver hair is almost exactly 1/3rd the height of the CEV. If the CEV is 5.5m in diameter, that'd make him almost 6 feet tall, which seems reasonable.

I like how one of the lockheed photos shows the CEV/SM in orbit with the launch escape system still attached. I think i read on the side of the CEV "I hauled 4t to orbit and all I got was this stupid beanie!"

Just saw the ad in the latest issue of Space News. Looks like an Apollo capsule...no big surprises.

That image really shows you how big the CEV really is. I remember going to the Air and Space Museum and KSC and how I was surprised by how relatively small the Apollo CM really is. In some ways it made my Hodna Civic look roomy. I think some of the Apollo astronauts are going to be very jealous of the Orion astronauts.

But isn't the CEV 5 m in diameter now?

Yeah.
Do we know that pic is of the 5 or 5.5? Either way, its going to be big. All this time I had imagined it smaller in my head.

We haven't seen any company's 5.0 yet.

Its always good to have something next to it you can relate size to. It looks like it could hold 4 crew members comfortably, still not quite sure how 6 might work though.

You could put six uncomfortable astronauts in an Apollo (rescue configuration). Given that the CEV has:
1) Larger diameter
2) Greater mold-line volume
3) Reduced-volume instrumentation (a laptop would probably suffice in a pinch)
4) Reduced-volume structures
I think putting six in would be pretty straightforward.

I was basing my comment just on the visual of the ad of the guys standing next to it, I know it can and will be done.

I can only agree with everyone else, after seeing Apollo size capsules in museums the CEV looks huge

Ref the two thrust chambers on the LM illustrations
It looks to me as if the LM illustrations may be heavily influenced by packaging issues relating to the proximity of engine(s) and Solar Panels, especially with the panels folded. That arrangement looks to give larger clearances for associated internal structure, rotational joints and power equipment etc. There may also be thermal issues that increase the required clearances between motor components and power systems beyond the purely structural.

Looks like maybe a simulation of the TPS.
