1 144 MEM Deorbiting version
« on: 10/20/2014 09:39 pm »
I decided I had to have this model.  Its from Shapeways, obviously and represents the MEM as it deorbits.

It comes with 2 shroud covers that don't fit real well and has the retropack attached.

I think I will have to eventually take off the Retro Pack and scratch one up so it can be removed for demonstrations.  :)

A couple views with the last simulating a possible display mode docked with a Mars Hab Module with Apollo on the side.

Of course, it might have to go on the front of this...

That is huge!  What design is that?

I will need to get a MEM for my projects.. I think the landed version is the one I will get.

That's the 1968 Boeing five-NERVA concept.  NASA eventually pushed for a three NERVA version in 1969.  There was also an intermediate four NERVA version that was on James Portree's old site, but has now disappeared. The difference between the five and three NERVA versions was that the five NERVA version recovered the sptages, hence the need for more propellant. The business (i.e Mars) end was the same in each case.

Great stuff, Mike......but now I have a 4th Mars project!!   It is convenient that 3 of them use the same MEM design!

Not the thread for it perhaps, but is similar documentation available for the three nerva and four nerva variants?

I have not found any.  The only variant I have seen is one in which there is one engine and three tanks.

This documentation does have some illustrations of different configurations

David Portree had it on his old web site.

He closed that section down of his old web site.  You could contact him directly. http://www.marsinstitute.info/rd/faculty/dportree/rtr/
