NASA Television to Broadcast Sept. 10 Return of Space Station Crew

Three crew members aboard the International Space Station are scheduled to end almost six months on the orbiting laboratory on Sept. 10 and NASA Television will provide complete coverage.

Expedition 40 Commander Steve Swanson of NASA and Flight Engineers Alexander Skvortsov and Oleg Artemyev of the Russian Federal Space Agency (Roscosmos) will undock their Soyuz spacecraft from the station at 7:02 p.m. EDT Sept. 10, for a landing in Kazakhstan at 10:25 p.m. (8:25 a.m. Sept. 11, Kazakh time). Their return will end 169 days in space since launching from Kazakhstan March 26 for a mission that covered almost 72 million miles in orbit.

At the time of undocking, Expedition 41 formally will begin aboard the station under the command of Max Suraev of Roscosmos. Suraev and his crewmates, Reid Wiseman of NASA and Alexander Gerst of the European Space Agency, will operate the station as a three-person crew for two weeks until the arrival of three new crew members. NASA astronaut Barry Wilmore and Russian cosmonauts Alexander Samokutyaev and Elena Serova are scheduled to launch from Baikonur, Kazakhstan, Sept. 25, (U.S. time), on a six-hour flight to the space station.

NASA TV coverage will begin Tuesday, Sept. 9, with a change of command ceremony when Swanson will turn over control of station operations to Suraev, and will continue Sept. 10 and 11 with Expedition 40 landing and post-landing activities.

NASA coverage, all in EDT, includes:

Tuesday, Sept. 9:
 -- 5:20 p.m. - Expedition 40/41 change of command ceremony

Wednesday, Sept. 10:
 -- 3:15 p.m. - Farewells and hatch closure coverage (hatch closure at 3:35 p.m.)
 -- 6:45 p.m. - Undocking (undocking at 7:02 p.m.)
 -- 9:15 p.m. - Deorbit burn and landing coverage (deorbit burn at 9:31 p.m. and landing at 10:24 p.m.)

Thursday, Sept. 11:
-- 12 a.m. - Video File of hatch closure, undocking and landing activities
-- 12 p.m. - Video File of landing and post-landing activities and interview with Steve Swanson in Kazakhstan

I'm a little late to the party but here is an update.  Everything is going well.  Alexander Skvortsov was first out of the capsule as expected.  Steve Swanson is now out as well.  Both look to be in good shape and good spirits.

Nasa 992 is standing by to take Swanson back to Houston.  Nasa TV reports it is harder to get the left seat crew member (Artemyev) out of the capsule as he has to be pulled over the center seat.  Artemyev looks fine and is smiling.

The crew have been making brief phone calls and smelling the flowers picked from the field and presented to them.  Artemyev not only ate an apple but is now holding a watermelon.  He personally requested a watermelon to eat upon his return and so he got one.

One of the windows on the Soyuz looks remarkably clear and not overly smeared by debris from the reentry process.  People are coming by the capsule now to get their picture taken with it and to peer into the windows of the upright vehicle.  Can't say I blame them.

One of the landing replays showed good views of the capsule immediately after landing.  I think it even showed the parachute being separated but I was looking away for a moment and only caught a brief glimpse.

After landing cosmonauts were given apples for rehydration. The special request was made by Oleg Artemyev - a watermelon which was brought to him after landing  ;D .

Space Station Expedition 40 Crew Returns to Earth, Lands Safely in Kazakhstan

Three crew members from the International Space Station (ISS) returned to Earth Wednesday after 169 days of science and technology research in space, including a record 82 hours of research in a single week, which happened in July.

Expedition 40 Commander Steve Swanson of NASA and Flight Engineers Alexander Skvortsov and Oleg Artemyev of the Russian Federal Space Agency (Roscosmos) touched down southeast of the remote town of Dzhezkazgan in Kazakhstan at 10:23 p.m. EDT Wednesday, Sept. 10 (8:23 a.m., Sept. 11, in Dzhezkazgan).

During their time aboard the space station, the crew members participated in a variety of research focusing on Earth remote sensing, human behavior and performance and studies of bone and muscle physiology.

One of several key research focus areas during Expedition 40 was human health management for long duration space travel as NASA and Roscosmos prepare for two crew members to spend one year aboard the orbiting laboratory in 2015.

During their time on the station, the crew members orbited Earth more than 2,700 times, traveled more than 71.7 million miles and welcomed five cargo spacecraft. Two Russian ISS Progress cargo spacecraft docked to the station bringing tons of supplies in April and July. The fifth and final European Space Agency (ESA) Automated Transfer Vehicle also launched to the station in July with the spacecraft bearing the name of Belgian physicist Georges Lemaitre, who is considered the father of the big-bang theory.

SpaceX launched a Dragon cargo spacecraft to the station in April, the company's third of at least 12 planned commercial resupply missions. In July, Orbital Sciences’ Cygnus spacecraft completed its third of at least eight resupply missions scheduled through 2016 under NASA's Commercial Resupply Services contract.

During his time on the complex, Swanson ventured outside the confines of the space station for a spacewalk to replace a backup computer relay box that unexpectedly failed. Skvortsov and Artemyev conducted two spacewalks during Expedition 40, totaling 12 hours and 34 minutes.

The space station is more than a scientific research platform. It also serves as a test bed to demonstrate new technology. Even routine tasks, such as monitoring and operating the carbon dioxide removal system, provides valuable data for next-generation life support systems. Carbon dioxide removal from the pressurized compartments of the station proved to work differently in space than predicted by ground tests. The crew also saw the arrival of the Haptics-1 experiment, part of an effort to develop technology that would allow an astronaut in orbit to control a robot as it explores its target, such as an asteroid or Mars, during future human exploration missions.

Having completed his third space station mission, Swanson now has spent a total of 196 days in space. Skvortsov has accumulated 345 days in space on two flights, and Artemyev accrued 169 days in space on his first mission.

Expedition 41 now is operating aboard the station with Max Suraev of Roscosmos in command. Suraev and his crewmates, Flight Engineers Reid Wiseman of NASA and Alexander Gerst of ESA, will tend to the station as a three-person crew until the arrival in two weeks of three new crew members: Barry Wilmore of NASA and Alexander Samokutyaev and Elena Serova of Roscosmos. Wilmore, Samokutyaev and Serova are scheduled to launch from Kazakhstan Thursday, Sept. 25.

Just two days after his return to Earth, Artemyev participated in postflight tests. He took his place in the CF-18 centrifuge at the TsPK facilities in Star City for a simulated hand-controlled descent from orbit. The aim of this study was to assess the possibility of landing in manual mode after a six-month space flight.

On September 15, he continued his postflight tests, this time dressed in a Orlan spacesuit in the “Выход-2” (spacewalk-2) test chamber in Star City to test the possibility of cosmonaut activities on the surface of another planetary body after a six-month spaceflight. Working at a gravity level of 0.38 that of Earth (possible in the upgraded simulator), Artemyev had to carry out operations related to a ‘Mars walk,’ such as donning the suit, raising and lowering the ladder, stepping down on the surface, walking on the surface, and remotely controlling a rover.

The members of the ISS-39/40 crew were officially welcomed in Star City. After a press conference, they laid flowers at the statue of Gagarin, after which an-hour long event followed with lots of congratulatory speeches.
