Next Space Station Crew to Participate in NASA TV Briefing, Media Interviews

The next crew to launch to the International Space Station (ISS), including NASA astronaut Barry “Butch” Wilmore, will participate in a NASA Television news conference and media interviews Wednesday, July 16, at the agency's Johnson Space Center in Houston.

Wilmore, and cosmonauts Elena Serova and Alexander Samokutyaev of the Russian Federal Space Agency (Roscosmos), will launch to the space station Sept. 25 from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan aboard a Soyuz TMA-14M spacecraft.

The news conference with the crew members will air live on NASA TV at 2 p.m. EDT, July 16. B-roll video of the crew’s training will air at 1:30 p.m. Reporters who wish to participate by telephone must call Johnson's newsroom at 281-483-5111 no later than 1:45 p.m. Those following the briefing on social media may ask questions using the hashtag #askNASA.

After the news conference, interview opportunities with individual crew members will be available for media participating in person, by phone or online. To request credentials to attend in person, or to reserve an interview opportunity, media must contact Johnson's newsroom by 5 p.m. Monday, July 14.

Wilmore, Serova and Samokutyaev will serve as flight engineers for ISS Expedition 41 until November, at which time Wilmore will assume command of Expedition 42. The trio is scheduled to return to Earth in March 2015.

A captain in the U.S. Navy, Wilmore grew up in Mt. Juliet, Tennessee. He is a graduate of Tennessee Technological University and the University of Tennessee. During his tenure as a fleet naval officer and pilot, Wilmore completed four operational deployments, flying the A-7E and FA 18 aircraft. He has accumulated almost 7,000 flight hours and more than 600 carrier landings.

Wilmore joined NASA in 2000 and flew aboard the space shuttle Atlantis for STS-129 in November 2009. The mission delivered two Express Logistics Carriers and about 30,000 pounds of replacement parts to the space station. To date, Wilmore has 10 days, 19 hours and 16 minutes of spaceflight to his credit.

Expedition 41 crew members will share their flight experiences on Instagram. Those interested can follow along at:

The main and backup crews of 41/42 minutes long expedition to the ISS continue to take the exams. Then, cosmonauts and astronauts begin to comprehensive exam training, which will sum up the training of crews in the Star City.

Today Roscosmos cosmonauts Alexander Samokutyayev and Elena Serova passed the exam simulator TC-18. This simulator is located on the base of centrifuge CF-18 is designed for practicing skills descent control ship from orbit in manual mode in case of failure of automation, controlling the return of the capsule with the astronauts to Earth. In this situation, the crew must be ready for urgent action. Also, before the astronauts on the exam task was to "land" as close as possible to the estimated landing point and experience with minimal congestion. At the conclusion of the examination committee, astronauts have demonstrated excellent professional skills in performing manual controlled descent.

August 20 such tests were successful Russian members of the backup crew of the ISS-41/42 The Gennady Padalka and Mikhail Kornienko.

Tomorrow cosmonauts and astronauts are coming exam training manual on the approximation of the WPK "Soyuz TMA-M" and the ISS.

NASA Astronaut Butch Wilmore Available for Interviews Before His Space Station Mission

NASA astronaut Barry "Butch" Wilmore, who is making final preparations for his launch this month to the International Space Station, will be available for live satellite interviews from 6-7 a.m. EDT Monday, Sept. 8.

Wilmore will participate live from the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center in Star City, Russia. The interviews will be preceded at 5:30 a.m. by a video highlighting his mission training and previous spaceflight.

To schedule an interview time, reporters should contact Seth Marcantel at 281-792-7515 no later than 3 p.m., Friday, Sept. 5.

Wilmore hails from Mt. Juliet, Tennessee and earned degrees from Tennessee Technological University and the University of Tennessee. He is a captain in the U.S. Navy and has accumulated almost 7,000 flight hours and 663 carrier landings in tactical jet aircraft. He was selected as an astronaut in 2000 and piloted space shuttle Atlantis during the STS-129 mission in November 2009. The 10-day mission delivered 30,000 pounds of replacement parts and supplies to the space station.

Wilmore's crew mates are cosmonauts Alexander Samoukutyaev and Elena Serova of the Russian Federal Space Agency (Roscosmos). The three will launch to the station aboard a Soyuz spacecraft Sept. 25 from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. At the space station, they will join Expedition 41 astronauts Reid Wiseman of NASA, Alexander Gerst of the European Space Agency and cosmonaut Maxim Suraev of Roscosmos, who launched to the station in May 2014.

The crew will continue supporting several hundred experiments in biology, biotechnology, physical science and Earth science currently under way and scheduled to take place aboard the orbiting laboratory.

Wilmore will assume command of Expedition 42 in November when Expedition 41 returns home. He is scheduled to return to Earth with Samoukutyaev and Serova in March 2015.

Media participating in the live shots must tune to NTV-3. Satellite tuning information is available at:

On September 3, the ISS-41/42 prime and back-up crews had their first day of the final exams. The back-up crew started first, dressed in Sokol suits, in the Soyuz simulator, where they faced a number of problems they had to cope with.

The prime crew, meanwhile, had their exam session in the mock-up of the Russian section of the ISS. They faced a number of other difficulties they had to solve.
Both crews earned a perfect score.
