Falcon 9 stage 2 will be deorbited SW of Australia shortly; first time the second stage has been deorbited on an F9 flight
I wonder whether this is being driven more by orbital debris considerations, wanting to practice relights on the second stage (building up experience for GTO missions), or if they're trying to use it to start gathering data for F9R upper stage reuse, or something else entirely.

If the burn is to depletion it gives a data point on what total vehicle performance really is.

That makes sense.

Last known state for rocket boost stage is 360 m/s, Mach 1.1, 8.5 km altitude and roll rate close to zero (v important!)
Hard to imagine a soft touchdown, this time anyway, if the last known state had the F9 at 28,000' going straight down at over Mach 1. Still, the very low roll rate is encouraging, and one can't wait to see yesterday's "Grasshopper II" video recreated after a live F9 launch.

Is there any particular reason for it to be hard to imagine? Was the velocity lower at that altitude on the previous reentry attmept? Could it just be a simple loss of signal as it approaches lower altitude?

I dunno... you'd need about +7.6 m/s^2 accel to reach v=0 at landing from that state, and impact would be about 47 seconds later.  No idea what was planned.

2. They can still burn to depletion, while putting it in the predefined zone in the Pacific.

By definition, burning to depletion and putting the second stage into a predefined "landing zone" in the Pacific are mutually exclusive, due to uncertainty in propellant consumption.

It's kind of like saying " drive your car until it runs out of gas" and also "park the car carefully in the garage".

lol.. but the garage is a VAST swathe of the Pacific.

It is, but a slight change in deorbit burn Delta-V (and thus reentry angle) can lead to a huge change of impact zone

It didn't say 360m/s straight down; it may still have had a horizontal velocity component.

Will NASA TV show the presser?  or should I find a different video feed?  I seem to be watching LADEE mission highlights.

EDIT:  ah never mind, it will show.

Any clues about the mass of this Dragon + Cargo?  Cargo has been given as both 2.27 tonnes and 2.01 tonnes by NASA and SpaceX.  Could this spacecraft have weighed 8 tonnes or more at insertion?

So, presser next. Hoping for a bit more on the First Stage. Idea will be to write up F9-R's hop in Texas and the CRS-3 first stage into an article for tomorrow, then Easter Sunday will be the berthing article.

It's a whole lot of SpaceXness.

(Can't believe the site is still mega busy! :))

A little burp there on the NASA TV feed; ran the wrong VT, I suspect.

Actually this looks encouraging to me. From that altitude and speed, the first stage would need to decelerate at less than 2 gees to reach simultaneous zero altitude and velocity.
I calculate 45 seconds to zero altitude and velocity at 8m/s/s, or 0.8g

Elon, Dr Hans and Gerst present at presser.

Elon reports issues with Dragon's thruster pods. Just like CRS-2, perhaps?

Elon on the phone.

Everything looks great regarding ascent.
Dragon deploy went well.
Some slight initial challenges with Dragon wrt enabling thruster quads, but now good to go
Boost stage reentry: good data down to mach 1.1
Awaiting additional data to see how potential landing burn went.
Heavy seas.
