SEA LAUNCH VESSELS FEATURED IN MARVEL’S CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER

The Sea Launch Odyssey Launch Platform and Sea Launch Commander vessels based in Long Beach, California were prominently featured in Marvel’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The new blockbuster film from Marvel Studios was released nationwide on April 4, 2014.

Marvel’s designers & production crew creatively re-imagined the vessels into a singular set that combined attributes from both vessels to craft The Lemurian Star. The Lemurian Star serves as the heart-pounding backdrop for the thrilling opening sequence in the film where Captain America leads fellow Avenger Black Widow and his select team of S.H.I.E.L.D. Strike Agents onto the vessel to rescue captured S.H.I.E.L.D. agents from French mercenary Batroc.

Approximately 25 Sea Launch and Energia Logistics US employees supported the 1 week shooting schedule including:

•              Trained 700 people for access to secure Home Port facility

•              Coordinated access to foreign flagged vessel

•              12 hour operations for 3+ weeks

•              Staged and maintained security for 24 trailers and tents

•              Coordination between Russia, Ukraine, flag state to build sets and re-light most of the Sea Launch Commander

•              Stunt work coordination

•              Local agency coordination Port of Long Beach, Long Beach Police Department and Fire Department

About Marvel’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier”:

After the cataclysmic events in New York with The Avengers, Marvel’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” finds Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, living quietly in Washington, D.C. and trying to adjust to the modern world. But when a S.H.I.E.L.D. colleague comes under attack, Steve becomes embroiled in a web of intrigue that threatens to put the world at risk. Joining forces with Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow, Captain America struggles to expose the ever-widening conspiracy while fighting off assailants sent to silence him at every turn. When the full scope of the villainous plot is revealed, Captain America and the Black Widow enlist the help of a new ally, the Falcon. However, they soon find themselves up against an unexpected and formidable enemy—the Winter Soldier.

As a longtime Sea Launch employee I want to thank the film crews for their hard work and professional attitude working at our site. They certainly achieved their goal that I would recognize my launch facility because the scenes were so richly detailed and highly accurate. Crews came aboard with more equipment and better technology than I could have imagined. I can't thank them enough for the privilege of seeing "behind the curtain".

I noticed this! Let out a "ha!" when I saw the Sealaunch name on the ship. Also a big smile on my face when I saw the rocket, clearly a zenit.

Yeah, I saw the Sea Launch logo, but I got lost when I saw the Zenit on the command ship.

IIRC, there seems to have been a scene filmed in the launch control room, but I was under the impression that the launch control room was offlimits due to ITAR.

Or maybe they co-mingled the control room with the bridge. But the bridge is very small.

It's all very confusing to me.

Edit: I am sure that Captain America is ITAR compliant.

ITAR, schmitar. It has to be S.H.I.E.L.D. compliant!

I'm waiting for the Congressional hearing into whether Captain America is exporting ITAR-sensitive action movie sets. Followed by the hearing into why SHIELD needs to launch satellites on Zenit if they already have super-awesome suborbital helicarriers....

CygnusX1, was that a real Zenit in some of the background shots, or all CGI?

Personally I don't really care if I see a spoiler but some do so...  Maybe heavyhanded of me but I removed all the posts that were spoilers or were quoting spoilers or were asking about spoilers or ...

We did OK with Gravity, it said in the thread title it might have spoilers. This doesn't so let's not have spoilers. Thanks for your consideration.

All CGI, they used a green screen backdrop during one of the big fight scenes.
LCC screens were all added digitally as well.

Like Winter Soldier? Wait until you see Guardians of the Galaxy (this summer, scores 11 on the weird s***-o-meter & ties into Avengers & Agents of SHIELD),  Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015, and will introduce Vision). Also a Black Widow feature.
