1/144th Revell Spaceship Two & White Knight Two
« on: 02/15/2014 02:31 am »
Just got a new project in to start today.  So far, I have just taken it out of the box to start studying it.  Long day at work and back in early tomorrow, so not much work will be done on it for a while.  It looks like the attaching of Spaceship Two to White Knight is an option, and it can not be removed and reattached.   That will have to change.  I think I may go with the magnets again.

Hi Ron,

congratulation, that's a nice model! With that, I've also flirted, but I still have enough to do with the Launch pad.

BTW, a cool idea for separating the spaceship with help of magnets.

I stay tuned.

Good luck Ron!

I wish they'd issued that in 1/72nd scale but I could see it ending up in my collection at some point.
I'll even excitedly look forward to "flags and footprints" and suborbital missions. Just fly...somewhere.

I found that the magnets I have are too big or too week to use.  I have some smaller and stronger ones on order.  I started assembly, leaving a way into the Spaceship when the magnets arrive.  I left out the clear parts and will use Microscale Kristal Klear after painting.  Next up is to putty the seams.

A little more progress.  Putty and sanding the seams.  Adding the engines and landing gear doors.  I have left the wing off of Spaceship Two so I can cut through the bottom of the fuselage to add the rare earth magnets when they arrive from Edmund Scientific.  I think I will wait until then to paint and add the tiny details like the antennas.

Received the magnets and installed them.  They were just about a millimeter too think to fit in the attachment bump on White Knight.  I had to cut the hole through the top and putty and sand it.  The magnet in Spaceship Two went in and is held in with epoxy putty. The connection is very strong and I have no danger of Spaceship Two becoming detached from White Knight by accident.  Sanding and painting is next.

Hello Ron,

great progress with the model and the magnet holder seems to work well and to carry the spaceship.

Keep up the interesting build.

Thanks, Manfred, this one is fun!  A few days of sanding, putty and painting, I have the base coat of white applied.  Time for the details and decals next.

Well done Ron, this is really a fascinating model.

I'm already looking forward to the decals.

OK, she is done!  I am very happy with the ships.  The decals are really nice, especially the big "Virgin" logo on the bottom of Spaceship Two.  I am also very happy with the way the magnets worked out.  VSS Enterprise hangs very securly on the bottom of VSS Eve.  Absolutely no chance of them coming apart.  The Krystal Klear I used for the windows is so clear it doesn't show in the pictures!

Here is a comparison of some of my 1/144th scale spacecraft.  Orion, VSS Enterprise and Dragon.

Nice work Ronpur!

Thanks, Bubbinski!  It was a fun and easy build.  Only the magnet mod was "out of the box" so to speak.  I wish now I had found a way to make Spaceship Two's wing rotate.  But, a new project is to begin!
