There is a dedicated thread for the presser.

Oh god! I was desperate to know about the fate of the stage as it was then we had the phantom post and now this sudden press conference! I literally haven't breathed since liftoff!

Every second is like an hour at the moment!

Now we have minutes instead of hours!

I got that! Uh, I got that reference.

That was an anti climax!

Only because so many insisted on raising their expectations way too high. AND thinking they knew what it was about.

Well I'm happy to get excited about things even if it doesn't come to anything...

@ Chris Bergin;

What I think of the reporter who sent you that e-mail is... unprintable, due to being even harsher than your comment.

That said, it's par for the course in mass media; many are just like that: grab the headline, to heck with the rest. It's not surprising that you and he don't see eye to eye; you have integrity, so, a different worldview.

Your way is also IMHO better from a purely practical aspect for a site like this.

I share the suspicions mentioned upthread; that the reporter had motives. One would be that he wants to know what you know. The second is he'd probably be delighted to see you reduced to his level of lack of info.

And... I've been trying to find a thread where it'd fit to put what's next, but I'll do it here instead as it's sort of related; I'm fairly new here, and I'd like to commend the job you and your staff do. This site has the highest signal-to-noise ratio that I've ever seen, and that's due to the moderation keeping things on topic and civil. I've been a mod on a forum elsewhere so I know it's a hard, often thankless task, so I wanted to give y'all a shout out for a difficult job done well indeed. Thanks for all that you do!

Just to be clear, he isn't with a space site, with a big mass media company you all will know. And I'd sell my right arm to have Space.com's presence!

They might be BIGGER but NSF is better... people who really want to know the details, written up in a truly superb way, and free of baseless rumor, know to come here. Chris, keep doing what you're doing, this way is the right way.

I sometimes wish that NSF articles had a "diff" feature though. Like "what is new since things about this topic were last reported". That's often half way down the article somewhere. Other than that, I love the articles. Especially the ones that are very educational about historical or technical elements.
LEO is the ocean, not an island (let alone a continent). We create cruise liners to ride the oceans, not artificial islands in the middle of them. We need a physical place, which has physical resources, to make our future out there.

Why quietly? Surely by the reporter's own words, Chris should publicly name him and worry about any consequences later? Afterall, isn't that what he said was the right thing to do?

Chris, kudos go to you and NSF.

Here at NASA Spaceflight, we're above that sort of thing. We are not them. We. Are. Not. Them.

Two nice articles today in Aviation Week on SpaceX:

An op-ed: http://aviationweek.com/editorial/editorial-spacex-s-plan-shows-aggressive-investment-rd

and the article referenced in the op-ed: http://aviationweek.com/space/spacex-plans-multiple-reusable-booster-tests

For Aviation Week, that's positively giddy writing!

Also, I want to offer a thought about that reporter we've been discussing.  Chris said he's a reader of the forum, so by now he (the reporter) is undoubtedly aware of the several dozen choicely-worded admonishments regarding his letter to Chris.  By now, he's feeling either very contrite, or he remains unbowed about our opinions regarding his lack of professional scruples.  If it's the former, I don't think calls to publicly shame him and threaten his livelihood are merited for what hopefully is a teachable moment in his professional development.  If it's the latter, well, all I can say to him is raise your hand and speak up for yourself mister!

But that's just my $0.02.

Got to share this, but I just received an e-mail from a journalist (not a space beat reporter, mass media) who's clearly watching this thread.....
<snip>

Well, he did say "report what you know"; his mistake was that he assumed you knew what was going to be in the presser (because you're obviously clairvoyant or something  ::) ).  Of course then he contradicts himself with "you can always refine it post-announcement" - look, either you know or you don't; anything in between is rumor and/or speculation, not fact, and I don't consider spreading rumor or speculation to be responsible reporting.

NSF isn't like "big media"; you're not driven by scoops and exclusives and other such nonsense (at least, not that I've been able to determine).  You're a news site for space flight enthusiasts who place a high value on accuracy and precision.  Sure, we'd love to get as much information as we can when we want it, but life doesn't work that way.  I'd amend his statement to "report what you know when you know it, not a second before, and don't call anyone a coward for wanting to get their facts straight."

IANARS; I'm just a code monkey with a slightly-more-than-casual interest in space flight and technology, and I've found this site to be quite enjoyable, largely due to the fact that a) you know what you're talking about, and b) you don't feel compelled to report on things you don't know about.

Keep on doing what you're doing, and let "big media" wallow in its own uselessness.
