Everybody keeps talking about the M!D throttling, but it could be more of a case of the middle engine having some differences since it does more flying and restarting than the rest. If they're going to use the Merlin to land the US, instead of those Super Draco looking things in the animation, the middle 1st stage engine could be more like the M1D Vac.

I expect that the news of the impending public disclosure by NSF of a LOT of what SpaceX is planning to do, has hit SpaceX like a bombshell. They have no doubt spent the past day scrambling to prepare an appropriate media release, that includes everything that was briefly posted here on Wednesday (and possibly additional related information), and it's entirely possible that this short-notice announcement by Elon Musk himself is part of that.

Na, doesn't work like that. This will have all been planned in advance.

We're not the Washington Post!

And we don't read the Washington Post for our space news! You're classier than them anyway Chris.

Though I agree, it would seem much more likely that the simple fact that this stuff must have been planned out for the past little bit meant that more people new about it. There's always more chance of information leaking closer to the announcement.

Elon Musk will make an important SpaceX announcement today, Friday, April 25th at 1:00PM ET at ...DC

Related to the mysteries news we're waiting or just a coincidence?

Could be. It'd explain why SpaceX haven't rushed to give me quotes.....totally get that if the boss is about to announce and we'll respect that.

It can't be a coincidence. It has to be related. News often leaks right before a press conference is about to be given.

FWIW, there is no mention of this event on the National Press Club website calendar...which suggests that it was a last-minute arrangement.

Well crap...now I'm sitting here at work waiting for noon CST. We'll get to hear Elon in Washington telling the world that a spaceship has landed...

It came from Spacex!

We're not the Washington Post!

Because if NSF WERE...
1) no more bandwidth bills, NSF would be using Amazon Cloud for free
2) A LOT more Blue Origin stories...
3) no wait, NO mention of Blue Origin at all because it's stealth...

Got to share this, but I just received an e-mail from a journalist (not a space beat reporter, mass media) who's clearly watching this thread.....

Subject: Elon Space X Announcement

Mr Bergin,

So I see you may know things about what is about to be announced.  Why are you sitting on it?  Always report what you know immediately.  You will fast gain a bad reputation as a coward and someone who is easily bullied by these companies.  Run with what you know and you can always refine it post-announcement<

HA! The last time I was bullied was when I was about seven and some "bigger boys" tried to shove me off my BMX! ;D Coward? You mad bro? PS It's SpaceX not Space X. *Smug face*

Anyhoo....

1) We don't know what they are going to announce. It could be anything.

2) We always take what we know and ask the company involved if they want to comment, hold back, or clarify whenever we can. We did that. Silence since, but that could be because of the announcement. While a note back saying that would have been nice, SpaceX has always been very nice towards me, so it's all cool. We're all fans and we just want to see things announced. We're not out to poke anyone or jump their announcements, we're just a mass of interested people. This place is a media site, but also a fan site. The more pressers the better!

3) Refine post announcement? That breaks 1 and 2, and it's rather crap to report something and then have to completely change it based on the announcement.

Pardon my French, but what a dick! ;D

Just to be clear, he isn't with a space site, with a big mass media company you all will know. And I'd sell my right arm to have Space.com's presence!

And that is why NSF has such integrity and a bunch of dedicated followers! This site is a credit to you and the hard work you put in, and in a time where news often equate entertainment it is nice to know that the basic values of good journalism are upheld here. I just wonder when you ever sleep... :)

I would think it has to do with first stage water landing, stuff. But it could be they will attempt RTLS on Orbcomm.

Or maybe some Pad39A news, and the first FH, for a Moon or Mars mission. More out there stuff, would be Dragon2, Raptor, MCT/SHLV.

Chris,

To be fair, I believe you have proved time and again that you won't sell any part of yourself and that is why this site is so well trusted. Keep givin' 'em hell!  I believe history will judge this approach well.

I second that! Kudo's for this forum and the moderators and of course Chris as master Jedi of space news. ;)
Scary how big shot journalists seem to value their responsibilities towards honest news gathering and publishing. More eager to be popular then to be right, regardless of who gets hurt in the process.
